Well I am almost ready to drop the hammer on a new TV. I have been researching trucks and though being a Ford guy for many years now I think I may go with a 2010 Dodge 2500 Laramie 4x4. I like what I hear about the cummins engine, the fuel tank capacity and the ease of installing delete kits for performance improvements.
I Thought I would give a shout here and see if anyone had pros/cons to add on the Dodge trucks. The truck I am looking at has 47k miles and I think it can be had for about 40k drive out. The truck is super clean and along with being fully loaded it has power steps and tonneau cover installed. I am thinking this is a decent deal for my area here in central Texas, anyone have opinions?

Make sure it has ALL of the updates done before you buy. What rear end ratio does it have? You really want the 3.73 for a good compromise between economy and towing power. Do not let it idle for extended periods of time.

You didn't say if it is a gasser or diesel. If diesel don't be to surprised at the poor mileage. Had a 07 3500 dually 4X4 and got 13MPG empty. However my 5.9L was great. And keep an eye on the oil level. They have a habit of adding diesel to the oil.

Go to the Cummins forums and read up on the mileage people are getting - even deleted. If staying within your GVWR is even remotely important to you I would buy a SRW 1 ton rather than a 3/4 ton.

That is one of the things I will be looking at with the gearing. I had heard they do run hot but extended idling should not be an issue with me. I will mainly use t for back and fourth to work and towing my trailer.

Anything would be better gas mileage than my F250 V-10!
This one is the 6.7 cummins deisel.
Thanks for the info on the oil level.

I'm sure I will be just fine with the 3/4 ton. My TT weighs 6600 empty, loaded and I don't think I will ever get over 8000 loaded, I am usually around 7200-7500 packed up.
I have done a lot of reading on the cummins forums learning as much as I can. I also have several friends that have 3/4 and 1 ton Dodge trucks, they have been very happy with them which is something else that is luring me away from Ford.

Sounds like an awesome truck!
One question I have.
do you intend to ever purchase a Golf Cart to haul to the campground? If so, the tongue weight, golf cart weight, plus family will quickly tax the payload of your truck.
According to this chart
Clicky
Looks like the Larime 2500 Crew Cab has about 2140 lbs payload capacity.
However, this is an awesome truck and I would be very proud to have one sitting in my drive way.
Thanks!

No golf cart in our future; there may be a 4 wheeler during deer season but that is muck lighter and I only hunt 90 miles from home.
Thank you and I do think it will be an awesome truck. I only have to see if the dealership and I can come to an agreement on price and trade in. I'm planning on heading over there tuesday but really can't buy until the end of the week, it will take me that long to gather funds.

I have been a Ford lover/owner for years and am really dreading the next sentence. If I were going to buy a new truck today, it would probably be a Dodge. Man, that was hard to write! The main reason being the Cummins with a proven track record. Ford and Chevy have crazy expensive fuel systems to own outside of warranty. I know that failures with these fuel systems have been rare, but getting more all the time. My FIL has a '09 Dodge 2500 4x4 Cummins which has been a good truck. Good luck with your truck, it should serve you nicely.
