There are lots of spots to choose from:
Look at http://www.rvparkreviews.com/ for more info about places to stay.
Private resorts/campgrounds-
In Aguana, CA (east of Temecula) Outdoor Resorts. Nice facility with privately owned sites that you can rent. Fishing pond, tennis courts, golf course plus the usual amenities... this is one of our favorites.
Chula Vista RV Resort & Marina- south of San Diego. Very good spot to see all that San Diego has to offer.
For the desert- Joshua Tree Natl Monument or Anza-Borrego both have great camp spots.

We spend a weekend every year at Emerald Desert in Palm Desert. All the amenities and 90% chance of great weather. Just got back from a weekend at Stagecoach Trails, just outside of Anza-Borrego State Park, if you like a more back to the earth stay with full hook-ups. Just two of many.

One of the nicest camp grounds we have ever stayed at is in your own backyard. You should drive over and check it out. Rancho Jurupa

Agreed! For the past three years we've camped at Rancho Jurupa during Spring Break. The concrete RV pads are nice, but the dirt/gravel, older section of the campground is a real treat.
We've always had good luck with county parks. State parks are now so expensive, and they are run by Sacramento who apparently forgot that simple lesson we all learned as kids; don't spend more than you make. State Parks? Anymore, I'm not impressed.
Federal Parks in the mountains are still pretty nice. Idyllwild has a few nice parks, though small. Heart bar is one of our mountain favorites. There's Serrano in Big Bear Lake. I've never stayed there, but it's always booked and I've never heard anything but praise about it.
It's fun to stay in one of the RV parks in Anaheim and spend a day with the mouse. We like the park on Ball near the 5, can't remember what it's called, though.
Where ever you end up going, you'll have a great time.

Look up Santee Lakes inland San Diego....that's a great one....Newport Dunes at Newport Beach is expensive but nice....also Ocean Mesa above Santa Barbara is nice. It's too hard to get spots at the beach here in California with the system in place....we go to County park websites and private parks. Try Riverside county parks and San Diego county park websites.
