Not a newbie mistake because I just did it last fall. The Aliner was in the driveway and I wanted to put it in the garage to do some maintenance. Hooked up, pulled forward, and ripped the shore power cord out. Repairing the cord was easy but I still need to get a new mousehole.
On the PUX forum we call these things SPUTS (stupid pop up tricks). They aren't limited to newbies.

I learned the hard way that safety chains should be the last thing to unhook. Trailer almost ended up in the lake when the wheel chocks slipped off the leveling blocks.
If you are camping at an event and totally blocked in by tents and other campers, don't be the nice guy that lets all the ladies use the bathroom. On day 2 of 4 the black tank was almost full with no way to dump. I went from the nicest guy around to a total jerk when I refused to let them use the bathroom.
If your trailer tires lock up slightly on loose surfaces, the brake controller is probably set to high. When braking on hard surfaces, it is most likely causing flat surfaces on a tire or 2 that are only 6 months old.
When choosing a brand new TT, you should probably not buy the biggest one your truck may pull. You should probably take the advice from the dealer in the odd case they say you don't have enough truck. I was right , my 1/2 ton did pull it, but it was far from pleasant.
That's it for now.

If you are going to put a gallon pail of ice cream in the freezer, while driving on windy roads, do not expect the latch on the door to hold it in.
Luckily we have a C and saw it fly out on a sharp corner and were able to put it away immediately. I cannot imagine the mess if we had a towed RV and found it much later.
We now have baby locks on the fridge and freezer to avoid this in the future.

Family is so excited to go on our first trip with new trailer we decide to leave on a friday night after work. Connect battery to front of trailer, connect trailer to truck and FLASH huge spark. Learned that the black wire is the possitive on a travel trailer. Fried the brake control and about 4 fuses on the trailer.
Worst part was having to explain to the kids that we could not go camping.
is that th ecase with all trailers? Black being positive or just the way yours was wired? I never really looked at mine yet.
Won't say "all" but most trailers have a Black and White wire to the battery and black is the possitive. I was smokin mad when i brought the trailer back to the dealer to find out what went wrong until they pointed to the metal plate stamped on the trailer tongue that clearly states "Black is +".

Wow, am I glad I only hookup and unhook once per year, but that still gives me two chances to do something stupid.
I did learn the hard way not to let the bug spray fall into the firepit. Oh and that you never, ever turn your back on the steaks you're painfully preparing for the grill. The dogs will disagree. One more thing. Never trust your hammock attachments if it was installed after consuming cocktails. Ouch.

DE88ROX, yes the 12 volt wires on MY Jayco and many trailers are BLACK for POSITIVE, WHITE for NEGATIVE. The idea is to treat it like HOUSE wiring, the HOT (voltage) is BLACK, the NEUTRAL (ground) is WHITE.
I have picked up some stickers from AutoZone that rap around the battery wires to remind me POS+ and NEG-.

-Don't every pull in under an old gas station because your daughter has to go to the bathroom NOW. Unfortunately we missed seeing the pipe that came down a couple of extra inches on the other end. New AC out of that trip.
- Don't leave the awning out when there could be wind/rain/ thunderstorm, etc... Ours was cratered one day when we returned from New Orleans, and we saw the same thing happen to a neighbor at Disneyworld on the same trip.(also a new awning)
-A large chunk of tire on the interstate can rip out your sewer system. (first day of a 3 week 2,000 mile trip) (new sewer system)

Now that is a serious oversite, probably belongs in it's own thread!
