I always call my CC company and advise them if I am going to traveling and will be using their card for gas. I have never had a pump shut off on me when I have notified them. I should also mention it is a good idea to notify them when you are back in your home territory.

The banks and credit card issuers are the ones setting the credit limit on credit card transactions at the pump.

My debit card does this, at $75.00. Never had an issue with credit card doing it. I have re-run my debit a couple of times though with no problems.

I had one card that had a limit of 6 or 7 uses a day. I found that stations used a 50 cent precharge to preauthorize the card, so that it showed as 2 transactions for each fill up. That night we were staying in a motel and the card was denided. A call the next morning straighted it out and doubled the charges per day allowed. Since then I carry more than one card. I also fill up at Flying J or Pilot, when possible, with an RV advantage card that allows fillups of over 100 gals without shutting off.

I can't figure out why the fuel stops limit the amount you can pump at one time.... It's not the credit card company... I can charge up to my card limit at the department store, but only $75 or $100 at the fuel stop.... Crazy..

Mountain Mamma,
This past fall we took a ten week, 13,000 mile trip from Los Angeles to PEI to Florida and back to Los Angeles. We used two credit cards and bought gas primarily from COSTCO (AE) and Sam's Club (Visa), we have a 90 gallon gas tank and there was only one time that I couldn't use my card over and over till I filled up. I don't remember where it was but somewhere in the East. I told my DW and she called the 800 number while we sat at the pump and got them to release our card so I could finish fueling. In that one case it was a regional thing with Visa.
We always notify both AE and Visa when we start out and at least once on everylong trip (more than a week in length or a thousand miles or so) we get a text message to call the CC 800 number and confirm we are still in possition of our cards. During that trip there was a gas station in Louisana that required we charge an amount prior to filling or their pumps whould shut off and reject our card. I charged $300 or something like that and when it filled went ack and they charged back the difference between what I charged and what I received.
Hope I answered your question, and I hope you understand that letting your CC companies know you wil be traveling and charging large amounts of fuel and that you will be in some far distant parts of this beautiful country.

It is a rare case that I do not use the card twice to fill up. Most places I stop it cuts off at $99. And I usually need $10-$15 or more to finish filling it up. Has never been a problem other than the hassle of having to do it.

Several times with our Citicard, we couldn't use it AT ALL until we called, because we were out of our "home territory". I always call before we leave and give them the general route and expected return date.

Probably because you are not signing a charge slip like in the store.
