Yesterday I was riding in the pickup without the TC and lost my tailgate when I went over a bump. PU is a 2008 Ford F350 dually. Nobody got hurt the tailgate just fell (luckily)to the road. However it is pretty badly scratched and dented. The body repair place looked over the whole tailgate to figure out what went wrong but could not find anything wrong.

latch mechanism failure or you didn't have it latched well to begin with. If it is lockable, lock it next time before you drive away and test it to make sure it's locked

If latched properly, I can't see how a tailgate could fall off. What about the cables? Were they not connected either?

Ditto! I'm guessing the tailgate can be removed by lifting it up a bit and pulling it out as it does on most trucks but IF the cables were connected.... I don't think so.

Very strange...If the tailgate was installed properly, that is with cables attached and properly installed on the hinges, I find it hard to believe it could come loose and fall to the ground. My suspicion would be someone messed around with it and disconnected the cables and possibly removed it from the hinges and rested it in place against the bed. Thus making it look like it was properly in place. JM.02

I tend to agree . All the tailgates I've seen have to be at a specific angle to disengage either the left or right hinge and then pull it from the other to remove . If the cables were attached , even if it bounced at that angle it would have dragged behind the truck by the cables .

These things get stolen all the time. I wonder if somebody was in the process of stealing it when something scared them off

Either someone was messing with your tailgate or you're not telling us the whole story.

The only way a properly latched, properly attached, tailgate could come off is if you hit a BIG bump REAL hard.

i think someone was in middle of stealing it they tend to stay latched decent, but as to the cables holding it on i have yet to work on a pick up with tailgate cables that aren't broke and one of them is only a couple of years old
