I have seen Class C RVs moving along highways without a towed vehicle. Is it easy to disconnect and travel around the vacation location, or is it not?

What are the advantages/disadvantages for traveling without a towed vehicle.

Thanks,

No body "needs" a toad. The reason people have one is so they can park their MH and move around easily site seeing, grocery shopping etc.

Many of the "toads" are recreational vehicles to go offroad, but to just go shopping or sightseeing unless you want to go off pavement, not really necessary.

But if you are inclined to go somewhere, and stay for a week or two in one spot, a toad is nice then.

Some camp grounds have a rental car you can get pretty cheap. Probably would be cheapest thing to do these with the high gas prices.

It depends on what one wants to do. The larger the MH, the more needed a toad is. A long rig pretty much will go CG to CG to boondocking spot, but not much else. A shorter rig can take up two spots in most strip malls, but in more urban areas where parking is tight, it may not be useful. A class B is pretty much useful anywhere but a low ceiling parking garage.

It also depends what one wants to do. If boondocking often, having a toad made for off-road is crucial. If one is just wanting something to detach from the mother ship for urban outings once the large rig has found its home, maybe a small Smart car might be the ticket. I'd probably say a good compromise would be a Jeep, such as a Liberty -- something that gets decent gas mileage in town and has a decent enough ride to handle urban driving, but still able to go off road into remote locations (not Moab gnarly, but to a lot of places.)

We camped in a class C belonging to my wife's parents several times without towing a car and it was not much fun. If you are staying at a certain place for several days you are either stuck at the campground or you must break camp and set up again every time you want to go somewhere. The truth is we preferred to use our pop-up with all its limitations rather than deal with the aggravation of local travel in a motor home. If I were going to travel in a motor home without a toad, I would only consider a class B.

We have been RVing since 2007. First season in a rental 29' Class C and now in our 31' Class C and have not NEEDed a towed vehicle thus far. We choose campgrounds that have trolly or bus service to local tourist attractions or have family and friends who visit and bring their car. One favorite location is Acadia National Park where you can ride the free buses throughout the park and surrounding towns and villages. One time we rented a car, which was brought right to our campground.
When we leave a campground we also plan ahead to grocery shop and sight see en route to our next destination. On rare occasions we have just unhooked and took off for the day. We also travel with bikes, so will bike to destinations that are close by.
Once we retire and hit the road for months at a time, we will invest in towing equipment and take the jeep with us.
We are leaving for Washington DC next month and will be staying at Cherry Hill Campground in Maryland and will just hop on the bus at the campground which will bring s to the metro.

See you on the road!

We bought our C three years ago and are not yet set up to tow. We just recently bought a vehicle we could tow behind us but I haven't set it up yet. For the past three years if we've felt we needed a car then my wife just drove behind me. The car does come in handy but not really necessary. When we went to DC we only to the MH and stayed where we could get public transportation. Most of the time we go to State parks and just use our bikes. If we are going near a place where want to do more sightseeing then we take the extra car. Just is easier. Once I get set up for towing I plan to always take the toad. Really is personal preference but I like having the extra vehicle to get around.

There is an old joke/story that answers your question:

A farmer wanted a new tractor... His wife, noting the cost of a new tractor (They ARE expensive) said "Oh you don't need a new one, You just want a new one, the old one is still good".

The farmer looked at her and said: Woman, I don't need a wife either, But I wanted one".

And she allowed as how he should get a new tractor.

No you do not NEED one.... But like a spouse.. Does come in handy on occasion.

If you're going to sight see then a toad will come in handy. It gets might expensive using the class C as a means to get around town.

Back when I had a class C I didn't have a toad, but, gas was a lot cheaper.
