With how expensive it is to repaint a truck these days, if I had only a 1/2" clearance on each fender, I would weld some 1/4" or 3/8" x 2" flat bar to each bracket to safely increase the gap, just as Joe has done in his pic.

I have about 3/4" on each side when I get square with the T/C. I have made a couple pieces of carpet that I wrap around the front jacks. They are some old runners that I cut into 4" strips and use a couple of small (1/8") bungee cords to hold them to the jack ... just in case I touch.

I also find that while loading that I keep my mirrors tucked in and I get a better "sight picture" while backing under the old girl.

But I am still practicing with this unit, as I bought it last November and have only had it on and off about 4 times.

Kerry, are you saying you have the swingout bracket extensions or just the regular swingouts? We have the swingouts, but it's still awfully close...1/2"!!! Even an extra inch on either side would be better.

Does anyone make any that are wider than the dealer installed?

The extensions are nothing more than common plate steel, same thickness as the extension bracket plates, cut to length, holes drilled, and spray painted with Rustoleum.

You don't need anything more than a hacksaw and a cordless drill with a 3/8" bit to make them yourself.

It's only expensive if yer truck is any other color than white .

I also have close to 1/2" clearance but since my trucks box has the Rhino liner I only have 1/2" between the wheel wells. I know if I get the truck lined up with the brackets I'll be good between the wheel wells.

I had the swing out brackets and wanted more clearance between the dually fenders. I simply got two 14 inch long pieces of square aluminum tubing that was 2"x2"X1/4" and installed them between the bracket parts with longer bolts as spacers. The extra space gave me lots of "wiggle room"when loading.

You really shouldn't be mixing steel and aluminum in a bolt together situation, especially not one with high shear loads...

While that may be true, the brackets were painted, the aluminum was anodized and painted and the components must have not known that because after 5 years of service, they showed no sign on corrosion or failure. Just as the aluminium siding of the camper showed no sign of corosion even though the screws holding it on were steel, not aluminium or stainless.
