I do agree with Sailor53. We have traveled even more states than he has and traveling in excess of the legal and posted speed is problem. It is a violation of the law and there is no excuse. Violator beware .

Here in Florida where we winter the average spped on I-4 seems to be 80+ and be as close to the car in front of you as possible. The accident rate is high as is the Florida insurance rate.

We stay at 60/65 when towing and stay in the far right lane as we should.BTW the left lane is the Passing lane not the speeding lane. If I am doing 62/65 and the limit is 70 one can pass without speeding.

Now with the States and cities needing revenue there is a crackdown on speeders and that is a good thing. We see no needd to speed. The speed limit is plenty and saving maybe a few miniutes is not worth the risk or the $$$$. Just My Opinion..

As far as fuel mileage, my Excursion gets way better mileage traveling at 85 mph (my comfort speed) than it does 45 mph. So...no point to this thread. America is all about freedom so you're always going to have people traveling at different speeds on the highway based on their personal choice regardless of the speed sign. No debate from me on this issue. Oh, and by the way....I park in the middle of two parking spaces in the grocery parking lot. Who says I have to fit between 'their' lines. Freedom baby, freedom!

Yup I love those Big Excursions that try taking up two parking spaces. Evertime I see one I let the wifey out and back my little Vitara right in tight to the drivers door. Get out Lock her up and do my shopping. The great little car ain't new so an odd body rash is just another beauty mark and I love the entertainment.
See ya down the road.

A BRAZEN EXAMPLE OF THE LACK OF COURTESY FOR OTHERS RAMPANT TODAY!!!!

It is "their" parking lot and it is shared by many it is common courtesy to park within marked lines when possible......

I have also been known to take up more than one parking space. Part of the problem is that the spaces have shrunk over the years, as the size of cars has gotten smaller. However I park way in the back of the lot where all the people whose rights are being abused would never park anyway.

If you get better??? mileage at 85mph go right ahead, but remember try changing lanes when you are in traffic when suddenly there is a truck tire tread in your lane. I think you might live longer if you were going 65mph.
I pray that no one else is in the wreck!!!!!

This is just a red herring, and you know it! We are not going to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by driving our 10mpg tow vehicle at the speed limit or less.

Interesting.

When towing I drive the speed limit or 70mph, whichever is lower.

When not towing I usually drive at 5-10mph over the limit. And I do not slow down when I drive by a LEO.

I have received speeding tickets. 4 of them in 40 years of driving.

I do not have a 'right' to drive over the speed limit, and you do not have a 'right' to hold up traffic by driving less than the limit. If you want to drive 'slow' then that's fine by me. But, if you are on a 2 lane and have a string of cars behind you, then please pull over where safe so they can go on their way.

Basically, be courteous when driving, even if the other xxxholes are not.

Gas consumption? Really? And you have an RV? That's a good one. If you were really interested in saving fuel you'd sell the RV, get a car that gets over 50mpg and stay in hotels.

If you re-read the OP you will see that we are full-timers. We sold the house so we could travel throughout our nation and our neighbor's and see the sights before we were too old to enjoy them. Yes, the truck and trailer use more fuel than an economy car, but it costs far less than it took to maintain our old S&B's and pay for rental cars and hotels. Just compute the difference in fuel consumption and cost by going 75 mph and 55 mph and maybe you will get a wakeup call regardless of the speed limit. The purpose of my post, for those that are interested, was to point out the value of the savings possible, increased safety, and the satisfaction of actually obeying the law of the land.

If we maintain our dependence on foreign oil, we will have a sword hanging over our heads. Just look at current events and the way Iran is effecting the global economy, our recovery from the recession, and the price at the pumps. Anybody enjoying that?.

Some of us will continue to attempt to justify their actions and ignore the truth until, in this case, it kills you and takes the innocent with you. If you will remember, I wasn't only talking about RV's, but all vehicles. Also, I never once mentioned driving below the speed limit though, if conditions warrant it, it wouldn't be a bad idea. If by slowing down increased your miles per gallon, yes, that would effect the amount of oil necessary to satisfy demand.

If we keep going as we have, perhaps we need to install governors on our vehicles to force compliance with the law for those who choose to defy it. JMHO

There will always be those with a bloated sense of entitlement arguing that society's laws are for everyone else, not them. Our jails, prisons, hospitals, and cemetaries are crowded with the likes of those with this type of mindset.

My bet is these are the same people who complain relentlessly about the lack of civility in our society.

I get it that you're annoyed by speeding drivers. Me too. Just don't try to make it a matter of national security. Be honest with yourself. Or else sell the RV and buy a Volt.

I already do my part, but I can't make up for your waste, too. Also, what would the weight police say if tried to tow our 5'er with a Volt.

Get real!
