Heading up to Carrabelle Beach for the first time from Tampa and it looks like U.S. 98 would save me about 50 miles versus going I 75. Never been on 98 and looking for opinions on the condition of that stretch of road. Also, any advice on must-do's in the Carrabelle area would be much appreciated.

98 is a great scenic route, but it does go through every little town along the way. We are heading that same route from Tampa in May on our way to New Orleans.

We will jump on the veterans expressway and then 98 up. It is all fairly good roads and not the raceway of I-75.

U.S. 98 is my kind of route in an RV. You'll have open road between small towns once you venture north of the metro area. From Perry over to the coast, you'll find mostly woods and farms. Once you get to St. Marks Wildlife Refuge, you'll find civilization again, passing through sleepy fishing villages along the coast.

Things to do? Relax!! Time will slow down and traffic will be light. You are in the heart of the "forgotten coast", the way Florida looked 60 years ago with only 2.5 million people in the whole State. Enjoy the fresh seafood at the local dives supplied by a now small, but active waterfront. There are miles of open beaches which are practically uninhabited. Just stop, drop a line, take a dip, or a walk. Many are pet friendly.

Visit Wakulla Springs State Park and see one of the largest natural springs in the world. No camping offered at the SP, but a great day trip. Take some bikes, as they are a good way to get around.

I took this route from St Georges to Ocala a month ago. I would highly recommend it. Good 4 lane road, not many stop lights and very scenic. Will be returning to St Georges the end of April with the RV and will follow this route.

Agree with everyone. 98 is a very nice drive in that area.

We just did that route in February stayed at Ho Hum RV Park in Carrabelle. They have about 20 sites that are pull in looking toward the gulf. You are about 10 feet from the water. The route was not to bad just take your time.

US 98 from Perry Florida to Pensacola is almost all 2 lane and all of it is 55 MPH or less. Not sure when you are going, but it's Spring Break time and crowded and congested in the major beach areas. Take your time and enjoy the sights.

Thanks for the info. It looks like 98 is the way to go since I'll be in no rush on travel day. It'll be nice to avoid 75 for a change.

I prefer US-98 between Pensacola and Brooksville, even at a slow pace that is less than a day's drive. Lakeland to Carrabelle is not so far, should be doable.

I have family spread out from Crystal River to Brooksville, been traveling the route since the '50s, and it has changed surprisingly little. One of Florida's less developed regions until recently.

In the daytime US-19/98 carries some heavy rock hauler traffic between Brooksville and the quarries south of Crystal River (one RV park is named Rock Crusher Canyon for a good reason) but those guys move pretty fast most of the time.

If you've not driven the route before, you might consider budgeting some time for the interesting places, like Homosassa Springs.
