This may have been mentioned, but nearly all baby rattler bites result in envenomation, although their venom volume is much less than that of the adult. Momma might give you a break, but her kiddies won't.

Youngest Son lives in Valencia, Ca. Was walking his Boxer Friday afternoon in a doggie park. Dog was bit on the nose by a Rattler about 1 foot long. Antivenom was $900. IV and Vet. care totaled $1800. Besides the danger, the expense is scary.

Our little mutt was bitten on the nose last fall by one smaller than that.....we guess she thought it was one of the small lizards she loves to chase. $1100+ later she was okay.

Our first rattler was last Saturday, curled up under one of the rose bushes by the front porch. We live at 5000' in SE AZ so we're a little behind the Tucson area.

DW is our official rattlesnake mover and is very good at it. We live in their territory and see no need to kill them.

At a pet seminar a few years ago a snake guy told us most women are bitten on the ankle because they are usually gabbing and not watching where they are stepping. Most men are bitten on the hand or wrist.....I'm sure you can figure out why....

Thankfully we are not in Rattlesnake country here where we live in NJ, although there are two locations in the state that have them, lots of them. When we bought our house 14 years ago, it had been vacant for a period of time. In the first couple years we must have removed 30snakes or more. But we never had mice. Most al lthe snakes were Garters. There were also some larger snakes, not really sure what, I do remember having a couple actually chase the riding mower!

Did I mention that I HATE snakes?

The day after my last post we were at the neighbors for dinner. As we were finishing up we could hear our dog barking non-stop. I walked over to see what was bothering her. She was at the patio doors. There is a large arborvitae right at the patio entrance from the yard. As I came around the arborvitae, I was two feet away from stepping on an angry rattler......all coiled up and shaking it's tail....I guess it didn't like the dog barking at it and would have liked me stepping on it even less....no harm, no foul....

well, we do live in their territory........
