DW is not a snake fan but managed to run over one in her ATV last week here in AZ. She didn't see it in time to stop. I was a bit surprised to see it crossing the trail, but it was a cool day. Thinking it was dead, I took a picture of it and spent a minute calming her down. Looked back and it was gone. Guess it just played dead for a couple minutes. Or maybe it was shocky.

I would have a new boat on order. Seems the old one would not hold water.

Come on down to South Texas. AZ and the rest ain't got nothin' on this region when it comes to rattlers. Just Google "South Texas" and "rattlesnake".

Every spring the same two signs go up simultaneously:

- Snake Bite Anti-venom (at every veterinarian)

- Snake Boot Sale (at every possible outlet and then some)

Nothing quite like a revolving tree of snake boots as you enter a convenience store out on a remote stretch of highway to make you stop and think.

Some good info here. Thanks for sharing. I don't techically live in rattler country, but we frequently travel to it only about an hour away. Last year in Sinnemahoning, one of the Park Rangers gave a rattlesnake presentation and we found out quite a few things we didn't know. Education is power. For instance, if you got bitten by a snake, you either surprised it or were messing with it. If you surprised it, it likely felt it was cornered, otherwise it will get away virtually every time. If you were messing with it, you got what you deserved. They strike at 170 mph! You are NOT faster than the snake. About 70 % of all bites are dry, especially if their heat receptors sense a foe which is too big for them to eat. When they eat, they require heat to digest, otherwise they will die. If you move them too far from their den, they'll likely die also. They are not the ominous killers they've been made out to be.

Next time, I'll preach on bats. Please pass the collection plate.

I believe you meant that 30% of rattlesnake bites are dry.

There are a few highly venomous snakes on other continents that NEVER give a dry bite.

Just ran across a little 20 incher yesterday coming out of Box Canyon, near NE of Florence AZ, our second this week, + one reported in our campground. The only incident I know of is a dog being bitten a few years back. They're really not looking for trouble.
