X3 on Ft Chiswell. We always overnight there on our way to Asheville or Knoxville. Nice clean sites, clean restrooms, a pleasant staff, and reasonable pricing for FHU's with cable TV and free WiFi.

I live in Roanoke. You don't want to stay here. No hook ups and small sites. Meant for tent campers not RV's. The 3 I recommend are:
1) Less than 1 hour North of Roanoke is a KOA Naturaal Bridge. Very close to i-81. Jellystone in Natural Bridge is a good 15+ minutes off the highway.
2) About 45 minutes south of Roanoke is Claytor Lake State Park. Water and Electric with dump station on the way out. About 8-10 minutes of 1-81.
3) 1 hour south oof Roanoke and right off I-81 is KOA Wytheville. 3 mintues off I-81. We actually go to this KOA for 2-3 night stays. It is a nice KOA with large pull throughs.
All 3 are good if staying just 1 night or a couple. Just remember that the VA STate parks don't allow you to reserve a site but just the campground so if you plan to pull in after dark or late, late afternoon the bigger better sites will be taken. Of course this is really only an issue on a Friday or Saturday pull in. Any other day of the week you will have plenty of good spots at a VA State Park
Good advice here...I have stayed at all four of these CG and this assessment is dead on.
At Exit 118 there is Interstate Overnight RV Park. But be warned, it is a gravel parking lot with full hookups. Last time I stayed the price was $20. It is across Rt. 11 from the Cracker Barrel. If all you want is a cheap place to park for the night without boondocking, it will work. If you want amenities, go somewhere else. We use to park here when are kids were attending Virginia Tech.

Depends on how you want to camp, if you can wait for another 1 1/2 hours south of Roanoke, is Wytheville, nice little NF CG call Stoney Fork, watert & electric sites, with a dump station, about 10 mi outside of Wytheville, just take exit 72 off I-81, follow I-77 N. to exit 47, Krenning Rd, CG is 4.3 on the left. Wooded, very quiet.

I'll second the suggestion of Stony Fork USFS campground. We were just there a couple of nights ago.
Another possibility, if you're just looking for a place to park for the night and can get by without hookups is the Camping World lot right at Exit 146. We were there last night. Although it's free, it ain't cheap - between the CW store and the Gander Mountain store right across from it, we dropped a whole lot more than we would have at the snazziest RV resort!
I'm originally from Roanoke and I too have not found a great place to stay. The KOA in Wytheville is ok. The Jellystone at Natural Bridge is a great place for kids. I just wish there was a nice park just south on 220 or 81 "closer" to Roanoke as my family is there. Shenendoahvalley is spot on.

If you are attending a VT game you can always dry camp on campus. Either near the VT Airport or on what used to be the first hole of the VT golf course (back when it was 18 holes) near the new alumni center. Cost is $50 for two nights.
