For all those using Verizon miFi, I called them yesterday and was astonished they didn't have unlimited! We will mainly use this for my husband's work. He has to sign into work and has to be home to use our high speed. This keeps him trapped here on weekends.

If we could get him a very reliable option that would free us up to get out of here more. I just don't know if 5MB will cut it. $80 seems a bit much for a limited option. Why are they taking away our unlimited plans?!?!

We have the 3G MiFi hot spot on an unlimited plan. Have had it for about 4 years now. I work from home fulltime for a major financial corporation, and the MiFi has enabled me to be able to work from most campgrounds we frequent. At a campground now as a matter of fact, and I just got off work lol. The unfortunate thing is that we can never upgrade beyond 3G for the very reason you mentioned. Verizon no longer offers an unlimted plan!

Since we are on the 5GB plan with the Verizon MIFI, and because "unlimited" was no longer an option when we got it, I've been monitoring our usage and have found that we never exceed the 5GB and rarely go over 2 1/2GB in a month. There have been times where we've had 4 computers on it doing "required" training courses and still not even got close to the limit. It's been half a year and I find 5GB more than adequate but...

...I don't d/l HD movies, which I understand can use a huge part of the limit (I heard two HD movies will about use up 5GB but I don't know that for sure).

We are only 3G in our area but we were in a 4G area for a recent weekend. WOW!! "Ten times faster?"... at least!! Lightning fast! (I even watched the Kony 2012 movie with no buffering). We're s'posed to be 4G later this year but even this 3G isn't bad.

So you think 5 Gb might be enough for him to work on the weekends? Interesting. Thanks for letting me know!

With Millenicom there is a $60 plan with 20GB data per month and that is more than enough if you are not downloading videos. The advantage for us with the EV-DO service is that the same router and USB modem that works for us at our home also works when we are traveling. We just unhook the modem from the roof mounted antenna and connect it to a camper mounted antenna and use the same amplifier as well.

I had HughesNet for 7 years and the service was terrible and the data rate was roughly double that of dial-up. But then dial-up where I am in California costs me $55 a month plus fees and taxes and there is no DSL much less cable so the cost of the Verizon service through Millenicom while still very high is our best and only real option. When we have big files to download we drive to the local library and use their free WiFi.

We use our own Cradlepoint router and Pantech USB modem so we are not locked into Verizon or any other provider. Millenicom is month to month and there is no startup fee and no fee to stop service.

They are taking away the unlimited plans because they can and they want to shift capacity to 4G in the big cities and do not care about service levels outside those areas and few local and no state or federal agencies are on the side of the consumer - not a news flash I realize.

Cell service/coverage is getting better all the time, but if one must have internet access 100% of the time, regardless of where you are parked, then Hughesnet satellite is the solution. With 100' of cable and a portable dish, you should be able to see and lock onto the satellite (as long as you have a clear view of the southern sky)....not without a challenge on an occasional basis, but it will get you on line when you are out in the boonies, and no other means are available.

It really should unless he is doing work that is graphics or video intensive. I often work remotely (IT support) and have only once reached my 5GB limit...and that was working from home for 27 days in the month. If you are in the new 4G/3G plans, the extra charge (if you DO exceed 5GB per month) is only $10 per GB. On the older plans, the overage charges could be astonishing!

Do you save on the MiFi's data plan too? I checked with some less-than-knowledgeable Verizon people and they said (after reading it somewhere, they must not get the request much) it only applied to phone plans of at least $39.95 or better (ours is $10 less than that so getting the discount would cost me $5/mo). They didn't read it as applying to data plans.

They also said I'd have to put the plan into my name.

Up until about a year ago, we had HughesNet satellite internet through Maxwellsatellite.com; but, I couldn't find their website, today! Maybe the cell phone based systems dried them up. Oh well. Maxwell Satellite was a fine place to do business with, while they were in business!

Somewhere online I read it's because too many people take advantage and download endless music and movies. This slows the service for others. Sorry, I don't know if that's true or not.
