Someone posted on RV Parkreviews that one should not RT. 89 from Browning to St. Mary's, MT because of the long descent and curves and downright dangerous.

Don't see any other way there. What is the actual scoop on that road?

Anyone who believes that road is too dangerous to drive with an RV should probably not go to the mountains on vacation (or not drive/tow an RV if they do)

It's doable, and I have driven it, but I prefer to take Duck Lake Rd north to route 404, then over to Babb, then down to St. Mary. It is a lot easier drive and is only a few more miles.

Go a little north of Browning and take Starr School Road. It cuts out some of the curves on 93. The pictures below were taken on 93 between Browning and St. Mary in early June 2010. Some curves and reasonable grades, but not serious mountain driving. Lower St. Mary lake visible in the last two pictures.

It's not that 89 is bad, but at the end of a long day's drive the curves can be tiring. It winds through foothills of the Rockies, where as the Duck Lake Rd stays more in the plains until it turns west to Babb.

So if you drive to St Marys from the east, I'd suggest taking Duck Lake. And then when leaving, say to take US2 west, take US89. In the fall the colors in those foothills are nice.

2X on Starr School Road. There isn't anything wrong with rt 89, but Starr School road is better - you can avoid some of the twists & turns. You will still hit curves & hills when you get back on rt 89 on the way to the park.

The other option is Hwy 464 to Babb and then back south. (That is Duck Lake Road). I have not driven Starr School Road so can't speak to that. Have driven the 89 once towing and would not do it again. Have also driven it several times with the TV and that reminds me why I don't do it with the 5er. Don't need to punish myself.

Do it pretty regular and we do it both ways depending on my day. Duck lake road is pretty straight forward and goes pretty easy. Taking the winding route is not too bad but you will have to keep your eyes on the road. I have driven many worse than that so not to worry unless you are a rookie. heck many years ago I took my motorhome through logans pass when they allowed it. That road is a piece of cake comparing to it.

LOL. Skip,I love your common sense posts. Pictures from Cloud Dancer show that route does not seem to be as challangeing as the road from Deming, N.M. to Globe and then on to Mesa. Or the road from St. John's AZ. to Silver City.
