"the difference in denominations isn't obvious makes it even more frustrating"
WHAT???
I just looked in my billfold, and the one dollar bills have a big "1" in all four corners (on both sides), and a picture of George Washington on the front.
a Five dollar bill has a big "5" in all four corners (on both sides), and a picture of Abe Lincoln on the front.
Seems pretty obvious to me!
But then, I put the bills in my wallet in excellent linear order, so that the stack begins with ones, then fives, then tens, then twenties. I try to spend the ones, so that there is never more than five in there, and I NEVER just stuff bills in my pocket. I have seen people pull a wad of crumpled bills out and try to find what they need. I couldn't stand the annoyance!
Personally, I would like to see the penny go away, and the silver "cartwheel" dollar brought back! I miss those big ol' silver dollars!

Much easier if the different denominations are different colours. You don't have to actually read the number on the bill or know the name of the President associated with it so there is much less chance of a mistake being made when handling them. I also arrange bills by denomination and it is frustrating to go through a stack of ones to get to the real money. Maybe it's just me but I find I collect them just like change because in reality, their value makes them a change currency. The US is about the only developed country that doesn't use different coloured bills and the only one that has a paper bill worth less than $5.
Anyway, not trying to tell you what to do, just give my views on coins vs small denomination bills.

Dang it, and I had 1,000,000,000 pennies saved up too. I just threw them all in the dumpster.

mowermech, I quit carrying money in a wallet years ago while in the Army and all the MPC was paper, as stated in an earlier post. Now I just fold what little actual cash I carry and put it in my front pocket.
I think folks who line up their money in their wallet, all nice and neat are a little anal, to me. Besides having a big butt bump on one side interfers with my sitting. I am the carefree type who just folds and stuffs money in their pocket!! I have no trouble finding a bill I need, I carry so few of them anyway.......

How much power does it take to melt them? How much profit is there after the cost of that power is factored into the equation?
I could be wrong, but I don't see any profit!

With copper prices today, I think the profit margin is much greater than $5.
Time to ditch the penny and the dollar bill.
Americans are a stubborn bunch. They will cling to "the old ways" long after they are no longer any good. Stop making pennies and the dollar bill and folks will quickly learn to adapt.
There is no value in smelting pennies unless they are pre 80's and older. In the early 80's the penny composition was changed because of the huge increase in copper prices. Pennies after that change only have something like 2-3% copper in them and the rest is zinc I think. There is absolutely no reason for the penny and every thing should be rounded to the nearest nickel. Rounding to the nearest nickel will most likely be a wash for an individual over the course of a year.
Dollar coins are absolutley retarded IMHO and the last thing I want to do is carry dollar coins around in my pocket. The dollar bill is great.
Like mowermech said there really is no right or wrong. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes.
