bear deliberately saving him..... hummmm I doubt it

bear attacking a known enemy "the lion/puma" and the man getting lucky, much more likely

Exactly what CA Dept of Fish & Game warden had to say about it. He in turn called the warden "gestapo" for not believing his story. Lots of strange folks in those parts of the land, probably too much wacky tobaccy.

Looks like we're all back to carting around bear spray.

Methinks that a bear with a cub is already in "protect" mode - wouldn't take much to prompt a response.

When it comes to wild animals one often sees people displaying little in the way of common sense and unfortunately a lot of them carry guns. A couple hunters during the first week of deer season in the Sierra Foothills came running down the trail and told a ranger that they had shot a bear. The ranger investigated and found that the two hunters had shot the hell out of a tent - luckily no one was inside.

I worry a heck of a lot more about hunters, especially ones with lots of beer at hand, than I do about wild animals or someone smoking a little weed. Of course Dick Cheney did not even have to be drunk to shoot his friend in the face.
