Hi bikendan.
We checked the tow capacity on the escape (5000 lbs) before we bought the trailer (3800 Lb) and had the hitch on the escape switched from the factory installed 3000 lb to a 5000lb unit with stabilizer bars and a transmission cooler. The installer is very reputible. Hope we're ok!

Trailer Life's 2012 Towing Guide shows the Ford Escape with a 3.0 V6 and a towing package rated to tow 3500 lbs maximum. I'd visit Can-Am Rv on the web, get their phone number and call Andy Thompson for some advice. He is the "Towing Guru" here in Ontario. Their dealership is located just outside of London, Ontario

there's no way an Escape has a 5000lbs. tow capacity!
whoever told you that, lied. why didn't you check with the Ford dealer? they would have set you straight.

it has had a 3500 tow capacity for years.
larger SUVs with the bigger 4.0 v-6, have a 5000lbs. tow capacity, like the Explorer. but not the Escape.

and just because they put a 5000lbs. receiver, doesn't change what the Escape can tow. it means it's rated for that weight but has nothing to do with the vehicle it's put on.

you've been sadly misinformed.

and if you decide to go the Can-Am way, will they cover you if you're in an accident and the investigation shows you exceeded Ford's tow specs and you get sued?

You're right Sam. The tow cap on the escape is 3500Lbs. We were mislead by the sales rep. and told if we went to a no.3 hitch (5000lb capacity) we would be fine. We went to a hitch dealer and had the conversion done (another $1600).
We will be calling the dealer tomorrow morning.....Wish me luck!

Hey folks;
Checked in with Andy Thompson (Towing Guru). He straightened everything out. The trailer weight range is 3500lbs. However the GCWR (Gross combined weight rating) is 7140lbs. He said, with my new type (3) hitch, brake control, stabilizer bars and trans cooler, I am good to go!

it's my fault, Chuck. when i saw the OP was going to pull a full height HTT with an Escape, i had to ask. and then when the OP posted that the Escape had a 5000lbs. tow capacity, i got worried for them.
