Planning our "every other year" Canada and Alaska trip for this summer and intend to take the ferry to Prince Rupert and on up the Cassier. Thinking about the reserved seats and dining package, how is it? Also notice we don't get in to Prince Rupert until late at night. Seems a little late to try to get into RV park, are there places to park otherwise. What are the "must sees" while there? Do folks park at the ferry terminal at Port Hardy the night before? Any other observations appreciated. Thanks.

Hello you are doing what we want to do probably next year. Friends went this route 2 years ago on motorcycles. They paid for a sleeping room said it was well worth it. My wife was looking at options
and routes earlier this year. Go to BC ferrys, Vancouver island, Port Hardy ferry to Prince Rupert on the
net for lots of information. I'm not sure about free parking at Port Hardy ferry terminal but we always
stay the night before free in Victoria at the Black bald terminal to go to Port Angeles in Washington.
There are many areas to boondock in BC so I wouldn't worry about a CG the first night off the ferry.

You might want to check in to an RV park.
We didn't want to be getting off the ferry and looking for a spot in the dark. The RV park just a couple miles up the road stays open for the ferry arrivals. Quick & easy. Pleasant enough too. Made a good quick place to stop and relax after a long day on the boat.

You can park at the Port Hardy ferry docks free the night before (at least we did). This was for the early morning departure. Quite convenient since you are already in line for the ferry. If I remember correctly, they even wake you up in the morning.

Try to find a detailed map of Prince Rupert. The ferry terminal is at the south end of a peninsula (there might be an airport further south). I believe there is an RV park nearby, and then the town. So the route east passes through town.
There is a provincial park a modest way on Hwy 16 (I believe the name is French for 'good man').
I took this ferry in May, before the summer schedule. The ferry left Port Hardy in the evening, and got to PR midafternoon. So there was plenty of time to camp some ways from PH (Malcom Island), and get to the prov. park outside of PR. But I think for a summer run, reservations at the PR RV park would be a good idea. I know from some Alaska ferry runs, it's enough of a pain to setup in the dark, without added worry of finding a site.

We had a beautiful ride on the ferry - clear and sunny. There is an RV park a mile or two from the end of the ride that stays open to receive people from the ferry - a good ride.

We were in Prince Rupert last summer, and yes, there is a nice RV park less than a mile from the ferry dock.
