I apologize in advance if (and most likely) this question has been asked before...
But, I've been calling for the best prices and have narrowed my dealers to around 2. I want to put a deposit down but I'm not sure what the next step is. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Here's the story. I'm getting one that's being built April 17th. Supposedly. I'm told it'll be ready by the 39th to pick up by may 5 th weekend.
It's a 13 hour drive and we will need to take time off work. Can we write in the contract about the delivery time?
Are the dealers supposed to write up a sales contract with all your items, doc fees etc before you give them a deposit. I'm thinking yes... What should be on it? Vin number or something like it?
Are deposits refundable if the cant deliver it by a certain time?
I feel like an idiot, not knowing what's next. I'm ready to pull the trigger but don't want to get screwed.
If you would like to pm me, please feel free to do so.
What else should I be aware of? I know when I pick it up I have to do a pdi (I think that's what it's called).
I'm trying to read the FAQ section but I didn't see anyhthing very specific, it just said to get things in writing. I kinda need to know by Monday because I'm having it built to my specification and I'm running short on time for the changes.
Thank you all for your input.

I will try and respond to as many of your questions as possible. The process should work this way. Before signing a contract or putting a deposit down, the dealer should provide you with a copy of the factory purchase order. Review it carefully to be sure all optional equipment is listed. You sign the purchase contract and place a deposit. About four weeks out from the delivery date, the manufacturer will provide the VIN number to the dealer who should provide it to you. The dealer should know about 7-10 days in advance of when the trailer will be delivered to them. He will call you and you arrange for a mutually agreed upon pick up date. When you arrive, you conduct a PDI to check that all equipment is on the unit. I suggest you ask to see a copy of the invoice to ensure everything is listed, compared to your copy of the p.o. Take your time doing the PDI and check all systems. My wife and I took 5-6 hours. I also recommend you camp 2 nights nearby the dealer to check out the trailer and try everything. This gives you an opportunity to get anything fixed before leaving the area.
Many times the manufacturer will run a little behind so you need to be somewhat flexible in accepting delivery. Hopefully you are not planning a trip based on a certain delivery date. Be upfront with the dealer about them communicating with you on the build status and you don't have to worry about refunds, ect. I guess to sum up my advice, expect to be late, do not hurry through the inspection process and have fun!

I am curious how you know the date your RV will be built if you haven't chosen a dealer or put a deposit down.
Normally the dealer writes a contract with sale price and equipment/options.
You sign the contract and pay a deposit.
The dealer then orders the RV from the manufacturer.
The remainder of paperwork is completed upon delivery of the RV to the customer.
If buying off the lot deposits are usually refundable at the dealers discretion. Deposits made on custom ordered units are normally not refundable.

Good question... Two dealers told me they have orders at the factory already with build dates April 17th and 23rd respectively. They told me that if they can get the order in soon, they can make some minor changes.
Maybe both of them are lying. I have no idea. That's why I'm asking. I have no experience and I could very well be hoodwinked into believing anything... Because I just don't know, never having experienced this before. Car buying is so much easier...
Thanks again for all your input. I really appreciate all advice and or concerns.
Once your order is in, you can actually call the manufacturer and talk to them thru the build process. They know once the vehicle is ordered, when it will hit the line, and when it will come off the line.
I don't completely agree with "calling" the dealers to get best prices............

It wasn't just the best price, but when it would get built. Only two dealers said they could build it by a certain date. Everyone else said 6-8 weeks or longer and all the dealers were at least 500 miles away. The closest that had my model was 500 miles away and they couldn't get one I wanted built for 2 months.
I just got an email from the dealer and I will be getting a vin next week. The build date is April 23rd. Should be done that week.
The dealer I decided to go with had a much more official sales order. It made me feel a little more confident with my order.
