You can not pull your useless handgun and shoot them if they have a gun pointed at you. If they don't have a gun or other weapon you are not in grave or deadly danger and if you kill them you are a murderer. To kill to protect property is mentally ill.
First off my gun is not useless regardless of what you might think.
Second, If me or my family is threatened with any type of weapon the use of deadly force is justified!
You ought not try that in civilized USA States. You'll be charged with murder. If the assailant is no longer a threat and you pull you piece a shoot him/her as they are fleeing you committed murder. In civilized states.
And I suppose your thought is if your state does not ban or restrict use of weapons, they are uncivilized? I feel much safer in places such as my former home of Florida rather than New York City, where the only people who have weapons are the police and the crooks.

We've only been camping for a year, and we haven't had anything happen. Dh is a LEO though, and his department requires him to carry at all times. Our state does not allow civilians to carry concealed, so no gun for me. However, I have taken several police department sponsored self defense classes. Plus dh beats me up on a regular basis to test my skills lol.
If they are set upon killing you then you are dead. You can not pull your useless handgun and shoot them if they have a gun pointed at you. If they don't have a gun or other weapon you are not in grave or deadly danger and if you kill them you are a murderer. To kill to protect property is mentally ill.
Spoken like a true victim. You cannot draw and shoot successfully on an armed assailant? This exact scenario is used in training. I have drawn from holster and hit center mass on my target at close range within 1 second shooting the DHS qualification course. I'm not even that fast or a Sergeant York, there are plenty out there better than I. It is possible and not out of reason.
I've carried the same pistol type on a regular basis in the military and civilian life for over 20 years. I'm fairly comfortable and confident with it. I do not find it to be useless at all. I have only had cause to use it self defense once against three assailants armed with a deadly weapon. Having that pistol was the difference between life and death. I'm still here...
Personal defense is a serious matter to contemplate, some I guess are just better off laying down and alloying themselves to be victims. If you choose self defense it is always your duty and responsibility to be knowledgeable and trained. This goes for practical use as well as safety/legal.
Target ID is always crucial, another poster mentioned shooting park rangers and family members in the dark by mistake. That is completely ridiculous and no sane and responsibility person would fire uncontrolled in the dark with no target ID and acquisition. You might as well run for fear of an asteroid falling on your head with a scenario like that dreamed up.
Personally I would never use deadly force to protect property, not worth it legally in the long run. Now you break in to steal property while my family is present, that is another story. I will not take the chance and hope you don't mean to harm my family.
Murderer you say if the assailant is not armed? You fail at legal knowledge. This matter is handled differently in each state but the majority of the country affords protection for residents in these cases. Know the state laws for which you live!
Uncivilized parts of the country? Interesting, I see what you did there...
Again it is all a personal choice and it comes with personal responsibility. Make the right choice for you and yours. Stay safe either way.
.22 revolver and a 20 ga. shotgun with arm's reach....nope, no problemos..
Hmmm Both excellent choices for close quarter self defense! Not so big of calibre as to go through the wall and into the next rv /possibly hurt some inocent bystander etc. I favor "Shot shells" my self for SD use and off duty carry. I have tried the taurus Judge (.410 shot shell 2 1/2 long in a revolver also the ability to fire the Colt 45 "LONG" cart) but I like the S&W Version better will fire the 2 1/2 shots + colt long's + 45 ACP and it holds 6 rds not 5 like the taurus
Granted 2x.410 w/birdshot probably NOT fatal at +20 ft but if the Bear keeps coming... 2x 45ACP hollow point hornady's will probably stop e'm, ... If its a big Mama bear then all bets are off and 2 left of.. like Clint said in the Movie "THIS WILL TAKE YOUR HEAD CLEAN-OFF"!! just gotta love the original COLT 45!!! Nope No problems!! As for anyone reading this please do not assume your local LEO knows all the laws. You can ask them. They will tell you their version of the laws and rules. however their are some great sites for everyone to read and learn from
national carry laws
Ohio CCW laws
Carry firearm rules
If you carry or keep a firearm near know the rules and laws for your situation you think you will need that said firearm.
Bigred1cav, I also am from Ohio. There are plenty of rules and laws that allow the population to carry firearms either in the open or covered up, in cars, trucks, RV's and places of business.
Here are a few links with good info.
You and I have had different observations. Maybe the department you worked for realized the need for training and practice. Personally, I have seen several LEO’s on the range for “remedial training” to get them ready to try to pass their annual qualification. Again.
