Wow, some of the paranoia in this thread (as well as the OP) amazes me (crackheads stealing everything in sight?). In the last 5 pages of posts, there are a number of incidents, mostly minor, that have occurred while RVing. However, how many of us could relate any similar incidents occurring when we WEREN'T RVing? And many of those incidents had nothing to do with the RV, but rather where they were. An RV doesn't necessarily make anyone "stand out" any more than a nice expensive car, or nice clothes, or any number of things. Being aware of your surroundings is what you need to be, regardless of where you are or what you're driving.

I've been RVing for 27 years myself, and with my parents my entire childhood prior to that. Can count on one hand the number of times anything like that has happened, and they really weren't because of the RV. On the other hand, I can also count a similar number of times where something has happened when I was in my car, or in LA, or...

My point is that being in an RV does not make you a target. "Looking like an easy mark" is what makes you a target for crime. Relax, pay attention, and just go camping!

I have had some firewood taken a night but come to find out someone had put 5 bucks under my wiper with a note saying thanks for the wood.

Rvers are some of the best people around but its the others that concern me. I carry when I travel, you just never know.

Which brings me to a question

Husb says we have to bring a gun. I don't like guns, don't like violence, have never used a gun. Do you
folks bring guns? I would rather bring a taser if I felt like something scary could happen but a gun, that kills people? No way! I told him I don't want a gun on board. Not that he'll listen. I think more bad than good would come from carrying a gun. Could get it turned on you or shoot someone in error.

Haven't left driveway yet either but don't want to head down some Lawless Highway either. I never heard
of Road Pirates. Except in Mexico. Saw a Dateline where banditos took a family's RV & made them lie in a ditch, shot at them, horrible story. Would NEVER go there even if site was free.

We stopped for maybe 10 minutes at the Saint Louis Welcome Center.
Had the front passenger door glass smashed and the DW's purse taken with her wedding and engagement rings inside.
Police said it was a daily occurrence.

I never get lost! Someone always tells me where to go!

For about 3/4 of the time we take the camper out we have a gun (or guns) . . . but then again 3/4 of our use of the camper is for hunting.

Just give them what they want. By the time you get a gun out you're dead.

I don’t know if it is still legal or not but BIL’s family used to spend the night at Texas road side parks.
Not really a Pirate story but they did pull into the rest area behind a welding rig truck.
Later that night they suspect the lawful owner of the welding rig showed up to retake it and and parked behind them.
Shortly thereafter a gunfight ensued from both ends of their MH.
They escaped with minimal damage and no causalities.
I understand they do not overnight in roadside parks any more.

not trying to keel haul the thread, but carrying a taser intrigues me, as I would like to have some protection on the road, but really do not want to carry a firearm...Anyone have any taser info?
thnks,
