I didn't know you could back in with WDH on (I know now that only applies to the sway bar), so I used to take them off when checking in so I would be ready to back in to my site. Jacked it up, took the bars off, started to drive without lowering the trailer - bent the tongue jack so that it was unusable. Fortunately, they had cut a lot of trees down around the CG, so we rolled a big one under the tongue when we got to the site (almost perfectly level). Went out and bought a new jack the next day - electric, because that's all they had. I miss having an electric jack on this trailer.

Another time, arrived home in the dark, and backed in. There are holly bushes and boxwoods all the way down the long narrow path I have to maneuver, and I heard a loud crack, which was not unusual to hear because of breaking branches. The next morning, however, I found pieces of my black and gray tank all over the yard - there was a garden hose looped up and thrown over one of the bushes. It got wrapped around the dump cap and ripped it apart.

At least your experiences have been quite inexpensive compared to mine.

Love all your stories... here is mine. Just picked up new HTT. Go to KOA. Hook up water and hear screaming from the HTT. The people at the dealer forgot to turn the shower off and my daughter was inside luckily. Good thing we had lots of big towels for the clean up. Moral of story. Make sure all your water facets are turned off before dewinterizng.

With a Hybrid Travel Trailer (HTT) its a SH"i"T Stupid Hybrid Trick

Been RVing off-and-on for 30 years or so. First mistake was not thinking in THREE dimensions when parking under a tree. Made a few other mistakes since then - just little things like not checking the coupling on the sewer hose before dumping, dragging the power cord behind the motorhome for 1/4 mile, testing the resiliency of the TV antenna against trees when I forgot to crank it down before driving. Like I said, just little things.

Will I make more mistakes - undoubtably! Will I learn from the ones I've already made - sure hope so.

Temporarily afoot, but lookin' to get back into the game

The older I get the more every day seems like it's the first time that I've done what ever it is I'm doing. At least I can save money on movies. I can watch a movie today and by next week I can watch it again as if I had never seen it.

So far, the biggest blunder was trying to drive away after unhitching from the TT at the campground and realizing that one of the chains was still hooked up.

That makes a loud noise.

That happened because someone was helping me unhitch. I have since refused any help of that nature so that I can complete the checklist in my head. The chain was still connected because we each thought the other unhooked it.

Good stories!

My first travel trailer I got about 12 years ago and it was a 1969 home made 12 foot trailer with a single axle. I went to the campground unhooked it and walked inside and to the back of the trailer. When I did this the front of the trailer with the jack on it came off the ground. Because I didn't have any chocks for the wheels when the front jack came off the ground the trailer started to roll down the hill toward the lake. I panicked and ran for the door which thankfully was at the front of the trailer. This caused the front to come back down and the jack hit the ground and dug into the dirt stopping the trailer from rolling down the hill any further. It was terribly embarrassing but, I was at the campground on a weekend that had very few campers so no one saw anything. I had only had rolled about 10 feet so I re hooked the trailer to the pickup and set it back where it belonged. BUT, This time I put rocks behind the wheels to keep it from rolling. I bought a set of chocks the next day.

True story! Although years later I saw something similar on a sketch during the Red Green Show.

We were attending a family reunion at a local lake. Several members of the family arrived before me. I was hooking up everything and talking and socializing at the same time. I hooked up the fresh water hose and continued my routine. My wife ran out of the trailer screaming that water was pouring out of the bathroom. I grabbed a wrench and ran in the bathroom thinking that a hose had come loose. Water was pouring out of the top of the commode. I had hooked the fresh water hose up to the black tank wash out fitting. I was lucky that the tank was clean.

You haven't lived until you get into a tight spot backing up and drive a sawed off tree limb through the bedroom wall. That cost 5,000.00 so...... Thinking some spilled water is small beans.

WOW!! I just bought my first TT. After reading all these remarks I'm having second thoughts. I've heard all the stories about the old timers waiting to watch the rookies pull in. Can't wait until I'm on center stage.
