Reply received from Algonquin Park:
Hi Frank
All the snow has melted. The campground is clear and dry at this point with a good forecast we are expecting lots of campers. All campsites are open and it is first come first serve. We did fill up a few years ago and did open LTR as overflow. Looks like it will be a great weekend for camping. Harvey and Adam will be working this weekend.

PrivatePilot wrote: I realize we have to pay to get brought the gates, but what I meant by boondocking was the ability to park somewhere inside the park boundaries to sleep if the campground is full. Are there any parking lots or rest areas between the west gate and Mew Lake where this is an option IF Mew lake turns out to be full?
As in previous years they will open additional campsites, you'll have nothing to worry about and yea, they do NOT like you camping in parking lots along the way. Pull into Mew, you'll get a spot.

Reluctant to go all the way direct to the campground on Thursday evening....it'd probably be around 11PM that we'd be pulling in, and I always hate being "that guy" who wrecks the serenity of the park pulling in with my trailer (and loud diesel), flashing headlights everywhere, etc etc......that, and, call me cheap, but paying another $50 for the one-hour of use on Thursday evening kinda sticks in my craw.
Thinking we'd go as far as Huntsville, boondock there somewhere, and then make the rest of the drive the next morning with an arrival ETA before 10AM or so.....does anyone feel that arriving on that sort of schedule that I'll be screwed for getting a site at Mew?
The opening of LTR sounds great as a backup plan, but in the above quoted email it didn't seem assured, just mentioned as something that happened in years passed.

The Wally World at 60&11. Fill up the diesel while your there.
You'll be fine, it will fill up through out the day on Friday but arriving early in the AM and you will have you pick of sites. We would usually arrive late Thursday evening and there was still lots of people doing the same as us, year before last i think we pulled in around 11PM and last year we took the Thursday off and arrived with almost no one there yet late in the afternoon
I got stuff to do around the house that can not wait for another weekend or we'd be joining you! Have fun

Update from Algonquin Park (Thursday morning- April 5)
"Hi Frank
Happy Easter,
All of Mew Lake is open for the weekend and there should be no snow left other than some piles left on the ground here and there and if have to will put people in Two Rivers Campground this weekend and they will have to use the Mew Lake comfort station.
Harv"
We also understand that at MacGregor Point Provincial Park near Port Elgin Ontario, that Birch Blvd, Ash Woods are both open. The staff are prepared to open Cedar Grove also.
Sounds like it is going to be a busy camping weekend for the parks that are open. Maybe this is a sign that Ontario Parks should be considering opening additional campgrounds earlier in the season.

...a lot of the parks should certainly be opening earlier, if even with limited services and a skeleton crew...heck, a lot of them should be staying open all winter.
That said, lots of us have been banging our heads into a brick wall for years trying to convince Ontario parks that the Victoria Day to Thanksgiving operating schedule is stupid. There's a LOT of good camping to be had on either side of that schedule but they don't seem to be willing to actually accommodate it.

Another question - is there a garden hose hookup somewhere in the comfort station at Mew Lake that I can use to fill the tanks in the trailer? I hate to have to drag up full tanks of water which is unlikely to last 4 days anyways. Will want to be able to fill up at the campground but am anticipating that the spigots will still be off...

Drag up full tanks. The comfort station is in a bad spot to bring water out to a 5er as the "normal" road into the campground is closed and your short cutting through the parking lot. If you need more water you'll have to bring totes over to the comfort station to fill them up and then refill your tanks. More than likely the dump station will be clear of snow and you can dump but there will be no water there.
Speaking of dump stations why is it NOT plowed all season? PITA that I have to drag it all the way home and lucky I have a Flojet to get rid of it.
