OK, my 5er buddies; its time to replace the tires on my 2006 GMC 2500 HD diesel. The GMC guys state get 10 ply "E" rated tires or $ 200+ each. I am not a tire guy, but what brand should i go with? The locals are going with Firestone or Coopers. What do you think?

Cooper DiscovererAT3 is the #1 rated AT tire now according to consumer guide, Michelin AT2 is the # 2 rated tire. Easy choice if you go by price the coopers are much cheaper. I would go E rated if you are towing.

Checking one website for my size 285/65/18 Michelin was 347.55 ea. Coopers were 272.00 ea. Thats 302.20 difference in price for a set of four. I am sure price difference's vary with different sizes.

This will be an interesting thread to watch. I had no idea Cooper tires were so highly rated. For me personally it is a no brainier. Its Michelin all the way for me even if they are much more expensive. I have always had excellent results with them and have reason to consider anything else. JMHO.

I have excellent luck with BF Goodrich Rugged Trail T/A made by Michelin. They offer a smooth, quiet ride with long mileage. They have come on two vehicles from factory and could not be better.

You could very well be right, I only quoted what I read in consumer guide for whatever that is worth. I too like the Michelin , probably my next tire the Michelin AT/2. I have been running the Goodrich TA's on my truck, it will hard to get away from them, they have been an excellent tire for me. My tire dealer tried to talk me into the Michelins, and there was not much of a price difference, but I had been running the TA's for awhile, and wanted to stay with them.

I put BF Goodrich Commercial TA's on both the truck and fiver a year and a half ago. They have been fine so far.

I've owned both. The Michelin AT\2 was a great long lasting (70k) mile tire on my Ford Expy. I needed a more aggressive tread for my Super Duty since I plow my driveway and decided on the Cooper AT\3. So far, so good with the Cooper. It's rated for 50k miles but it's a serious mud & snow design. It's quiet on the highway and I'll have to let you know how it performs while towing since I haven't had a chance to do that yet. Another major difference is the sidewall is much stiffer on the Cooper, which should translate to superior towing charecterstics.

Should have been moved to towing/trucks section. But seeing it's here, I'll say I'm happy w/ Pirelli Scorpion STR's all season. I use them during the summer and switch to winter tires on their own rims for winter. Just make sure the air psi is up to snuff on whatever brand one uses before heading out. ESPECIALLY when the temps are warm/hot.
