Did I read something wrong?

The tow capacity of the truck is 6700 lbs.
And the GVWR of the trailer is 7700 lbs.

Why is anyone saying to go ahead?

I tried pulling my 297BHS with arounnd a 7700 GVWR with my 1/2 ton Suburban when I first got my trailer. And well put it this way, I got a 3/4 ton about two trips after I bought it. It was pretty misserable. My sub shifted and shifted and shifted. I thought my trans was gonna not hold up and that was without the Overdrive on. It's just not a good idea in my opinion. Just my 2 cents worth.

Nobody has asked if your truck has the heavy duty towing package. If not, you don't stand a chance.

My tow vehicle is similar to yours: 2005 GMC Sierra 1500/5.3L/3.23 gears. According to the owner's manual, it is rated to tow something like 7700 lbs. My first trailer had a dry weight (useless number, I know) of 5840 lbs. Packed for travel, I'm sure I was at that limit or even above it. But I towed it over 12,000 miles all around the country with no problems. Did I wish I had more truck? Yes, at times. Was I uncomfortable about the tow? Not in the least. Take it out of overdrive, use the tow/haul mode, and let it downshift when it needs to.

Lots of differing advice being given. Ultimately, only you can decide if you're comfortable with the combination.

You buy that trailer and (like me) you will end up with a new truck 1 year later.

Made the same mistake with a 5000# trailer towing with a F-150.

Sure enough....after 12 months of those miserable trips I bought a 2500HD Diesel.

Before you buy the Trailer, make sure you can afford a new truck

In the process of buying our first TT ever. we have decided on a used 2004 Jayco Eagle 29BHS.

I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado ½ ton, standard V8. I am putting a weight distribution hitch and adding a break control. My truck specs say that it will tow 6700 lbs. the Jayco specs are below. I am a little nervous about not knowing for sure that it will be able to handle it. What do you guys think?

Jayco 29BHS
UVW = 5,475#
GVWR = 7,700#
Hitch Weight = 715#
Trailer Length = 30'6
I'll try to summarize what others are saying.

1) Start with the truck's "tow rating" of 6700#
2) Assume the weight of passengers, optional equipment, cargo, and WDH is 700#
3) Subtract 2) from 1): 6700-700 = 6000#. This is the estimated maximum allowable loaded trailer weight which can be towed without exceeding the truck's GCWR.
4) Given a brochure UVW of 5475#, assume the actual UVW will be 5600#.
5) Assume you will add 1000# of cargo to the TT.
6) Add 5) to 4): The estimated loaded TT weight will be 5600+1000 = 6600#
7) Compare 6) with 3): The estimated TT GVW exceeds the maximum allowable weight by 600#

If you can shave a total of 600# from the combined assumed weight in 2) and the assumed cargo in 5) you might be able to stay within the truck's GCWR.

I don't think the engine will have a problem with it, but I do think the limiting factor will be the suspension. I towed a similar TT with 1/2 ton, it wasn't pleasant. I ended up with a 3/4 ton and a pleasurable drive. Just my experience...

Dear BigMcD6,

Weights....ya at ya limits!

Engine....will be nosiy as it will need the

Transmission...to drop to 3rd at the slightest incline if you want to drive at speeds above 55mph!

Most posters on here have learnt thru experience remember, including me!

I've only had my TT (5,700 lbs dry) for a little over a month and I'm towing with an Armada with factory tow package. I've been out a couple times and it does a pretty good job but I'm already wondering how much better a 2500HD for F250 would be.

OP, everyone is entitled to their opinion and needs to do what works best for them. Would a 2500, 3500, 4500 or a semi be a better tow vehicle then what I have now…yes, there is no doubt. However, my half ton has pulled my trailer through the mountains and never skipped a beat. Your trailer truck combination is at the limit and you’re going to need to make that call; at the same time don’t let some posters make you feel like you need a tank to pull a pop up. If you rig is within the limits or over by an amount your comfortable with and you believe to be safe on the road for your family and mine; in my mind your good to go. There are lots of people on the road with tons of truck capacity who drive out of their minds because they think they can…”I’ve got a ¾ ton, I can go 130 km/h…”.

I’d rather the responsible driver marginally overloaded than the out of control driver with capacity any day of the week.
