I haven't spent a lot of time on this forum even though I have been a member since 2006 it took a few years before I was able to buy another camper and resume camping.
One thing I have noticed is that gun threads don't last long before they get locked. I firmly believe that self protection is an important consideration especially for those that camp far off the beaten path. There is an old saying safety in numbers but what if you are the only person boondocking with no one else around? But perhaps this is the wrong place to ask gun questions.
When you think of it you wouldn't go to a gun forum to ask questions about camping and RV issues so why ask gun questions here?
I suggest that going to a forum devoted to guns and gun safety and gun laws would be a better place to take your question. I have been a member or visited almost every gun forum on the internet and can name about a dozen sites but this two sites can provide all you need to know about guns for self protection.
Try using these two sites for gun questions it will probably get your questions answered faster and save the MODs the trouble of monitoring and eventually locking the gun thread

I agree completely...unfortunately Firearms are a highly charged subject...seems like you're either for or against it...and both types of folks are entititled to their own version of the "Freedom of Speach".
If it stayed on topic it would be great..but it never does. I like Glock Talk, the 1911 Forum and Smith & Wesson forums...so that's where I hang out when not here!
My posts shouldn't be taken for factual data. They are purely fictional, for entertainment purposes and should not be constituted as actually related to scientific, technical, engineering, legal, spiritual or practical advice. Amen.

I have given up trying to point out the reasons why a gun can come in handy to people that would rather not have anything to do with guns. People that don't feel comfortable around guns are probably better off without out them. But I do encourage people that want to consider methods to protect themselves to seek out the information on other sites that are gun related, and avoid bring it up here.
If anyone has recommendations of which sites are helpful to people totally clueless about guns please feel free to ad the info.

You cannot even remotely mention firearms here without the gun haters destroying the thread and there is a built in bias on the moderation side as well on this issue. I find it interesting that gun haters feel so compelled to join in the conversation. If you try that on the pet forum you will be run out of town on a rail with the moderators leading the charge. I have just stayed out of the conversation more lately on both subjects as my views do not seem to be in lock step with the gun hating, pet loving public.

I hope you really did not intend to suggest that pet lovers and gun haters were, by definition or personal preference, always the same??
My traveling pet and always available firearms would be very confused.
Seems like this is a clear demonstration of how discussion on this topic quickly gets "wrapped around the axle".

I don't feel the mods are crushing topics just because of the topic. I think they're looking for signs that people are loosing the ability to remain civil with one another.
After reflection...I have truncated my post...because I was about to go off on the proverbial "tangent"...
All the best,

There are things that are specific to the RV forum here, but comments about Constitutionality, ammo performance, specific model and specific focused training is beyond the scope of this forum in my opinion.
Providing links to certain gun web sites such as HandgunLawUS.com, which provide information on how to avoid legal problems, National Rifle Association which provides a variety of services, more than just advocacy that are famous, are the kinds of things I THINK are valid for this forum.
Additionally, soliciting for personal experience while traveling, practical advice (for example what to do when RVing in Canada, or states with aggressive and restrictive gun laws), methods of safely securing firearms, or who to contact for specific training and advice also SEEMS to be within scope of this forum.
Further, though I have not seen it written anywhere, if it is outside forum rules, you can certainly send a person a PM. I certainly have on more than one occassion.
My experience has been that when the discussion moves beyond dispelling myths, education, and into the "your mamma wears army boots" flames, the forum moderators rightly locks the thread.
For example, discussion of the Trayvon-Zimmermann case is not appropriate for this forum. It would be much more likely at home in the myriad of pro/anti gun web sites, where I am sure it is all the rage.
Much closer to the edge, but within the limits of this forum, again in my opinion...and edit me if I am wrong moderators...would be the basics how Florida's Stand Your Ground law applies to RVers and travelers.
These are just my opinions, and I have no problem with the moderators editing this post as necessary. This is a private forum and we must all play by the rules.

Enjoy the RV forum as a wealth of information on camping and RVs and take your gun questions elsewhere.
As far as guns go I recently upgraded my NRA lifetime membership I was at Endowment Member, then went Patron Member and just went to Benefactor Member and I happen to also be a retired police officer that has seen the bad things that has happened to good people who have chosen no to take measures to protect themselves. About 6 or 7 years ago I came home to discover someone had been living in my house while I was away. Judging from his prior arrest record if I had not had the means to protect myself I would have wound up in the hospital or dead because I am too old and in poor health to be able to protect myself without a gun. I wish there was a way to show people what I have seen in 20 years as a cop but a gun is not the best solution for everyone and if a person is not comfortable around guns they are better off not having one.
If anyone has any questions about guns I will be glad to offer what ever help I can but I would rater do it off this forum thru private messaging or in a gun forum in order to not cause problems for people that operate this forum.
