We are heading to New England and someone suggested taking I-78 vs 81 north, we will be going on 87 north up to Troy NY from there. Is I-78 a better road for a motorhome then I-81? Also if anyone knows of a good campground off 87 in NY I would like to know it's name. Thanks in advance

It is hills vs. traffic. I-81 north to Scranton than i-84 east to I-87 is more hills, and steeper hills, than I-78 east into New Jersey to I-287 north to I-87 north. But the New Jersey route will run you into more traffic depending on the time of day. The toll on I-87 starts an exit south of I-84 but the extra amount is fairly insignificant though I don't know by how much. There is no toll on I-78 going east, only have to pay leaving New Jersey going west.

I've run all the routes getting up so if I had to pick one of yours, 78 would be my choice. One stretch east of Hamburg Pa is kind of bumpy but not bad. If you stop over in Lickdale overnight (just north of the junction of 78/81) its about 250 miles to Troy.
If you are just going out to 81 to avoid Baltimore/DC consider going to exit 104 in VA, taking rt 207 east to 301north. Stay on 301 which turns into 896 and joins 95. Go north on 95 through Philladelphia into NJ, pick up 206 through Princeton to 287 north to 87 north.

I drove up here to Ontario from Maryland yesterday. There is a lot of construction on I81 around Wilkes Barre/Scranton I bailed out and took 476 north around it.
A really good route is I78 to route 22 to bypass Allentown then 33 north to 209 north at Stroudsburg. 209 north to I84 then east on I84 to I87. This route will get you north without having to mess with all the traffic on I287 through NJ
Whichever route you take,
Safe travels, Brenda

If you decide on this route and it is a nice one...there is a decent campground called Tri-State which is right off 84 before you cross the river into NY..can actually get to it without getting on 84...when you get to Milford,NJ just stay on 209 til it brings you up to 84 the campground is right there just past Wal-Mart...Chuck

Personally, I wouldn't do this. Rt. 22 is shorter distance-wise but is only two lanes each direction - not enough to handle the volume of traffic that uses it. It gets backed up regularly. If you do the I-78 route stay on it and pick up Rt. 33 right from I-78. There are two hills but they are not long.
PennDOT prefers to route through traffic to New England via I-81 to I-84. On I-78 there are huge warehouse/distribution facilities at Rt. 100 in Fogelsville and an intermodal terminal in Bethlehem. Add the "local yokels" to that mix and you get an incredible volume of truck traffic. Not my idea of a good time. JMHO

I will speak only about what I know. On May 14th. we drove south to NJ via the route Can-Am mentionned. Despite the rain it was do-able. Yesterday we traveled north from NJ to the 1000 islands region via Rt. 22, and 476 and connected with I81 north. To moi, yesterday's route was the better of the two. Both will get you there - but I81's road work is sad news, in the southerly direction!! BB
