DH and I are planning a trip in the MH (34') for about 2 weeks through Virginia in late July. Focus will be on Va history, with Civil War sites a real goal. Thinking of starting off around Williamsburg, then Petersburg and Richmond, then areas in between ending up maybe in the Shenandoah Valley. Any "must see" suggestions or CG's we should stay at or avoid? Please only share about places you have actually been to. Any and all pieces of info will be appreciated. We will have a toad that will make us more mobile!! Thanks again for your help.

We enjoyed American Heritage RVP near Wmsburg. We always enjoy visiting Civil War sites.
Have been through Civil War battlefields & museums in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Manassas/Bull Run and Chancellorsville. Some you can spend an hour & some much longer.

it is in Virginia Beach, but we did day trips easily from there.
went to yorktown and jamestown. did not make it it williamsburg.
jamestown is done very well, very educational, great museum and reproductions, etc.
it was nice there in early November. it will be hot and muggy there in July.
the campground is large but well laid out and a good pool for the kids, etc.

Download or send away for some Civil War Trails maps. They have a lot of information on them and allow you to follow the routes of the campaigns.When we did it some of the stops had messages that you could pick up over your radio but I don't know if that's still in effect.
+1 on Newport News Park. Not only is it a really nice campground, it was a Civil War battle site and still has protected earthworks right in one of the campground loops ("B", I believe).

+2 on the Newport News park. Nice park and the staff was really great. A few less leaves would have been nice, but we were there in very early Spring and it might have been cleaned up a little better later in the year. Leaves were so thick that you couldn't tell where the pavement/gravel on the sites was at.
