I am looking for your thoughts on best road maps for exploring the Maritime area and Newfoundland this summer for a couple of months.
We won't be off road in the total boonies, just plan on driving our Class B van around sightseeing. I'd like to get them now online to use for planning purposes, as my AAA maps are rather vague. We'll also use a basic Garmin GPS.
I've used spiral book maps like the Ordnance Survey maps in Ireland but usually just use paper fold ups. Open to all ideas.
Will be looking for same for Maine if you have thoughts there.

Contact the various provinces and ask them to send you their tourist guide book, camping information and map.

Agree with Tripalot - contact the provinces (before you leave on-line but also stop by the visitor's centers when you arrive; these folks are helpful and have latest info).
Assume you travel with a laptop. If so, I use Microsoft Steets & Trips to plan and DeLorme to track (along with Garmin). My husband is still hung up on paper maps but I like the instant flexibility of mapping on the computer. He uses the information I give him (mileage, alternate routes) but won't do it himself.
Hope you like the Atlantic Provinces and the people are great especially in Newfoundland.

I did what the above posters stated. When I was planning a trip to the east coast I went online to each province and had them send out their complete packages. Came with all kinds of great stuff including maps.

We pick up these from Walmart stores locally, if you like paper maps in book form, really quite detailed for all the roads you would be normally on without destroying your Class B.
You can order on line also.
Back Road Maps
They must not know about Newfoundland,as I don't see one for there.

Yes, official road map of each province.
Each one has more icons for special things, or types of things ie., provincial, national and commercial(private) campgrounds.
& these are the most likely to be up to date.
I like being able to look at the big picture and see the detail too. Thus, I prefer the print maps and will look at where I'm going tomorrow during the evening.
I prefer calling each provincial tourism number. Then I tell them my special interests and they send me pamphlets on those topics.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

I have always had good luck following the maps and guides sent to me by any of the east coast provinces.
Just be careful following your GPS. Don't know about Garmin but the last time we were in New Brunswick my Magellon, with the expensive map updates by the way, still did not know about the new 4 lane section on Hwy. 2 for a long way between Fredericton and Edmunston. It kept trying to direct me the the old highway.

We vote for the Back Road Map. We have used the one for the Maritime area and it covers NB, NS, PEI, and NL. The maps are very detailed and covered roads not covered by Provencial maps and our GPS. Cost is only $19.95 and well worth it. As indicated, pick it up at Wal Mart.

I start on the itinerary plan now since we are returning from a few weeks in Florida. Time to nail down summer scheme!

We did the Cnd'n maritimes last summer in a pop up. A must get is the Doers and Dreamers guide for Nova Scotia. If you can get one the Nova Scotia driving guide is a good idea too. Both are available from the province. Nova Scotia does the best job i have ever seen for their travel guides. Let me know if you want some ideas for places to go and things to see.
