Is it necessary to have a fuse or breaker at the battery?

All wires to the positive battery terminal should have a fuse sized to carry the load and protect the wire.

Hi,

Always. I'd prefer a catastrophic failure fuse to a breaker for solar.

Never put a breaker on any of mine (except the big house array, which has a breaker in the control box for the inverter).
