It is not hard to increase power in a turbocharger diesel engine. Done properly it is entirely safe unless you get drag race power crazy. The engines are built to make more power that our fine government will allow the engine manufacturers to make. It is all about emissions. In order to meet federal emission limits engine manufacturers have found one way to reduce the dreaded emissions is to retard the timing. That reduces emissions but also reduces power and fuel mileage. Some of the power programmers TS Performance MP-8 for example put back the timing the engines were designed to have before the EPA stepped in. Using the MP-8 will not harm your engine BUT if you have it turned on it WILL NOT pass a emissions test. I personally do not care and there is no emission testing here. If you have a MP-8 and are going to have a emission test just turn it off and it will test stock.
A diesel pusher passed me last Oct on our way down to Florida, that scared the heck out of me. It sound like a tornado was about to hit us. That 6 inch exhaust was pointed to the right side, loudest thing I ever heard on the highway. I hang around hot rods about three days a week, some of them with 600-1000 hp,so it takes a lot of noise to surprise me.

I stated in my original post that the sound was a bit different.
By no means is it extremely loud. My wife would have had the muffler back on the same day. Climbing hills yes it is louder but 55-60 on the highway about the same as stock. Standing beside the tail pipe at idle about the same with a different tone. With a little throttle about the same different tone.
