When I leave South Texas this week I'm planning on making stops at various Louisiana State Parks. I read on rvparkreviews that the LA state parks are charging a $6 ReserveAmerica fee for walk-in and drive-ins that have no reservation. I have visited hundreds of state parks in my life and have never seen this before. Is this becoming the norm for the Nations state parks?
I sent an email to the LA state parks to confirm whether or not this was true. Here is the response that I received:
Mr. Philips,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding reservations at Louisiana State Parks. Yes, we do charge a $6 transaction fee for each reservation made, regardless of whether made online, by phone, or as a walk-in. This fee is assessed by ReserveAmerica for the cost of their services. More information on Reservations can be found here: http://www.crt.state.la.us/parks/ifeefacguide.aspx. Travel safely and enjoy your visit to Louisiana!
Regards,

Reserve America has been charging that for years. They run the Colorado and Wyoming state park reservation system also.
I guess it is just like pay Ticket Master fee when purchasing a ticket to a live event.
Everyone wants a piece of the pie.

Don't know if they still do, but about 4 yrs ago they were accepting the Senior Pass for 1/2 discount. Not too bad a deal.

I can understand the 'fee' for making a reservation via on-line or phone but a 'walk-in' is NOT making a reservation.
Unfortunately.....our parks are being given away to 'concessionaires' who now have control of our parks and can charge what they feel.

Yup, on both accounts. It is certainly greed to want a fee when you did nothing. And it seems like our government like to give concessionaires whatever they want. They are able to charge more because the "park" is highly desirable?!? Their facilities are not highly desirable themselves, only because they are in a "park" owned by, well, us. And they charge more because "our" park is a nice place to visit?!? GREED, yup, that is the right word.

The guy at the campground office has no way of knowing what sites are available unless he accesses the same database everyone else is using to detrmine which sites are reserved and which aren't. So you may not be accessing the database but the guy in the office is, and he has to input your reservation before someone else books one on the same site.

Perhaps there is a problem with semantics. A 'walk-in' site is one that you access on foot. It does not mean it's a no-reservation, first-come, first served.
