My 2 girls haven't been camping a lot. But they wil be going a lot with us now that we have an RV. They are not yappers but they will bark if someone walks by our campsite. What sort of things do you all use to stop the barking? If I am going to scream at them I may as well let them bark! I saw Cesar Milan use a small corrective collar when the dog barked and it really worked. Has anyone tried this?

I personally don't like those collars but if they are used right and not just to hurt the animal they do work.
We have had good luck with a bottle of plain water, when my dogs bark, I squirt them and say stop. It seems to work and water doesn't hurt them at all.

Watch more episodes of Cesars show...he uses the collars as a last resort. I cured out Golden Retriever puppy by merely using the "Pssssst!" thing that Cesar does.

I tried the cheap shock collar that "aladgadly" only shocked when dog barked. It had no affect on the dog. She just gor real submissive and still she would bark. I have not used it since feelin bad. I will try the water bottle. Praising when she does not bark is somewhat helpful. She sits next to me so I can calm her before someone aproaches. Most folks seem to understand.

I don't ever want to hurt them or  make them cower. I will try the water thing and the Pssssst thing. I have used the Pssst thing but if I am close enough to them I will use the Pssssst and a soft two finger poke

Training is the best answer. What you describe IS yapping

DO NOT use a shock collar!!!! It tells them that strangers cause them pain and makes things worse. Try it on yourself, you'll see how much the lowest level hurts!!!
Keep a bag of tiny treat bits on your person and when they start to react (ears perk up, they stand, hair up etc) say "no bark" or whatever code word you choose and give them a treat. If you see them coming first, say "no bark" as they approach and treat them. Talk to fellow campers and set them up. Do this continuously, even at home, and they'll learn quickly.
Later, reward with a pat if you want to wean off treating. Make sure they're really small and keep them on you at all times until they get it.
Be consistent and be patient. Depending on the breed, depends on how quick they catch on.

Squirt gun and command "Rover NO" in a stern but soft voice. Takes about a month for the dog to stop barking and just do an alert pose when someone walks by.

It's real hard to get a dog to stop doing a natural instinctive behavior. Most behaviorists suggest substituting a more appropriate behavior to replace the bark.
I taught one of ours to go get her tennis ball (happy time subsituted for the alert/protection) another (lab mix)to "get yourself down" where he would bark once then kind of grumble under his breath and come to me to get a pet or treat. We started with verbal command (one time only) followed by physically escorting him from the passenger seat (always where he barked). He learned pretty quickly to respond to the verbal command to "get yourself down." Eventually he didn't need the command, he'd bark once, grumble them come back to us.
Too many people use the shock collar INSTEAD of training, rather than an aid in training.
