Long time lurker, first time poster
We will be heading to Custer, SD from North Dakota in late July. I've heard the roads there can get tricky to navigate with a camper. We have a 31' BH that we'll be towing. My HOPE is to camp at Custer State Park. What's the best route to get to the Stockade South Campground? Or...IS there a good route? We'll likely be coming from the Ellsworth AFB area (stopping there to refuel a final time and pick up final groceries.
If navigating Custer State Park is a PITA for bigger tow behinds, what campgrounds do you suggest in the area?
Thanks!

Very few roads are not good for RVs. Stay off of Iron Mountain Highway and you should be just fine. There are LOTS of warning signs when you get ON that road warning high vehicles to stay off.

piece of cake. go west on I 90 to highway 79 and go south to Hermosa and take 36 west to the park. Stockade south campground is on the west side of the park, but the road through the park is fine. it is a scenic highway, curvy and will have traffic on it, but just take your time and you'll get there.
the only dump station in the park is at Game Lodge campground just after you enter the park on the east side.
enjoy. it's a beautiful park.

Take I-90W to exit 61 (Rt.16). Stay on 16 south all the way into Custer, SD. At the main intersection in town, turn left on 89/Alt16 for about 3.5 miles to Stockade Lake CG. About 50 miles from the AFB. There are shorter routes, but they tend to knock the corners off of your camper going thru tunnels BTW, Custer has grocery stores and gas stations, but not much else.
After you park the camper, then you can explore.
Here's the link to South Dakota attractions. Be sure to drive the wildlife loop in Custer SP.
Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

I think we went the way Jim described. The wildlife loop use to be great. Donkeys walked right up and put their heads in your window. You won't regret this trip.

Thanks all! Hubs is active duty AF, so we'll probably literally stop into base, fill up on last minute groceries at the commissary (I imagine that would be cheaper than grocery stores near the "touristy" areas, and gas. Also thanks for the tips on the stuff to see along the way! Now if only July would hurry up and get here

The directions given will get you there, and are correct. When you get there, do NOT forget to drive through Wind Cave Nat. Park. You will see more wildlife than the wildlife loop, and you can make it an extension of the wildlife loop road.
I live in the Black Hills, and Wind Cave is our new favorite Nat. Park, since is is easier to see wildlife here than Yellowstone anymore, but there are no bears. As an interesting note, the Wind Cave bison herd has no cattle dna, but Custer State Parks does, and they are just across the fence from each other. They take that very seriously. Also, the elk in Wind Cave are typically seen on the gravel roads, more than the paved roads.

Oh yeah, the truck stop at Ellsworth AFB is no longer open, but the one at exit 61 is open.
