I have the Blue Ox BXW1500 and it specifically states in the manual that the bars do not have to be removed when reversing.

I never had before my last trip, but I probably will from now on. Turning and backing wasn't a problem, but the last site we camped in caused my truck to be higher than the camper when parked. I had a heck of a time lifting my truck enough to get the bars off because my electric jack wouldn't lift it high enough. I kept having to stack things under the jack and try it again. Of course, it took three times before I had enough under there to get it to raise. I think it's just easier to take them off while parked level.

I have an equalizer hitch, by the way.

I had the friction bar for years and always just loosen it prior to backing up.
I've never removed the tortion bars until the jack has taken some of the pressure off.
This has worked a 100 times or more.

For backing into sites we usually don't remove them, but not all friction based, sway control systems are built exactly the same way. It would be best to consult your owner's manual or hitch manufacturer for the most accurate advice.

I agree.

Our Equal-i-zer manual says nothing about taking them off. We never have. But we are pretty good at backing and have never been in an extremely tight turn. They do make some noise, especially when new or wet.

I always take my sway bar off just as a precaution.

Got to post 7, JBarca's post, of the below linked thread. Probably the best explanation, with pictures, of when/why to remove a friction sway bar.

That is an entire WD hitch w/ intergrated sway - OP has a sway bar attached to a basic WD hitch (such as this).

I do when I stop to check in or just before backing into the site. I hate the noise and don't want to take a chance I'll bind them and have them be difficult to remove once in the site. Takes all of about 1 minute for me.

It is amazing how difficult that some are having understanding the question. None of the "integrated" systems require you to remove anything, but they don't have sway bars either. The question is obviously referring to a friction type sway bar and all (that I have ever used) clearly stated to remove it before backing up. WD bars on the other hand do not have any such requirement.
