Dont mean to drag our personal situation in here, i just dont want to bury my in laws after the scatter their stuff all over the road.

Trailer has been sitting at a family members property being used as a seasonal type lot. Tires i am sure are junk to. This is gonna be interesting at Easter dinner Sunday...

After 6 years sitting, most on this Forum already think the tires should be replaced.

Is it the "N" or the "O" that he does not understand?
He can do as he pleases by himself but you are correct to protect your children (or anyone elses).

I feel for you man. That's a tough situation to be in. If it were me, I'd probably "pass the buck" so to speak....just to smooth things out but still get your point across.

Tell him you thought about it, understand where he's coming from, and have even considered it....but you checked with your "resources" and are strictly being told it is dangerous and probably even illegal. Say "I trust you....I just don't trust old TT's and all the other idiots on the road". After that you can say you simply don't feel comfortable with it...no offense intended.

That's probably the approach I would personally take, as he IS your FIL and you WILL have to live with your decisions moving forward. Bottom line, don't allow your kids to go but do the best you can not to be overly offensive about it. I have 2 boys myself, so I know where you're coming from.

I'd suggest you do this quietly (rather than at dinner) so the issues don't take on a life of their own by him feeling the need to defend his position. At that point, it'll be more difficult for him to concede.

Bottom line: All issues resolved or kids don't go. No ambiguity.

In laws.

I don't care what all the so-called experts say- I wasn't on the altar with the in-laws... I married my girl, not her family.

I got into something similar with my MIL back in the day, over a car seat for our little 2 year old. She felt she could shoot around town without securing him in a car seat.
Thankfully, my DW agreed with me, and we shut that down right quick.
DS doesn't get in MIL car without buckling into a brand new, properly secured car seat. Period.

There was some hurt feelings, but she got over it.

Imagine the feelings if something had happened...

Michigan law does require working brakes on the trailer period!!! I'd also look at the trailer tires for dry rot since it's been sitting exposed to the MI air. We have a lot of friends around MI who would be more than happy to tell him how unsafe he's being.

Don't forget to get your MIL involved.

Any way you can join them on the trip and (of course) take the kids in your vehicle?

Camping in Michigan--can't get much better than that!

Over 3000# - Michigan requires the trailer to have brakes.
State brake requirements
Can be confirmed on MI government sites, but it's a lot easier to read on this one.
If FIL won't listen, but you want to kids to camp with him I suggest you drive them to camp yourself.
He really is looking for trouble! His EMERGENCY stopping distance is likely doubled with that combination.
