My buddy says, "They did say they tested it and the pH level was off...that 2.5 gallons needed to be replaced to equalize it again."
This is a 2012 PSD truck. I wonder, is Ford giving its diesels different coolant than what their gassers are getting? If not, it makes me leery of new Fords in general.
I bought a '96 Windstar and a '00 Mountaineer from this place; they're 5 miles from my house. But they've undergone 4 ownership changes since that Windstar purchase. A guy named Matthews owns it now.

Ford uses the same coolant in both their diesels and gas engines.

O.K. I really didn't know as I previously stated, but did pop over to TDS and did a quick search in the 2011/12 forum and found the following:
CLICKY
Looks like the 2011 and up Fords take a lot of maintenance of the coolant similar to what the prior PSDs that used the "plain jane" green coolant. I guess it's all the EPA stuff now on the engine.
I can't verify the validity of it, so take it for what you paid for it.

Alot of the cooling sys problems on the 6.0l is do to the coolant being left in the veh for to long. Ford said when they came out that it was good for 100,000 miles. That's about 70,000 to much. With all the coolers on these new motors its asking a lot of the cooling system. I change the coolant and trans fluid on my excursion ever year. Now I'm am a mechanic so its a lot cheaper for me than to have some one else do it. But I have also never seen a part go bad becaused you changed the fluids to much. I do know those new trucks have two cooling sys in them so doing a complete coolant change can take up to 8 to 10 gallons of coolant. But they are also high performance engines that may need a little more maintance than the older ones.

If there is no overheating (e.g. failed oil / egr cooler).
If there is no tuner.
If there is no "performance" or other mods (e.g. EGR delete)
Coolant will barely make it to 100,000 miles.
A more reasonable interval is 60,000 to 80,000 miles or 5 years.
Regular testing of coolant (once a year) is a must plus replenishment of additives.
(If coolant fails to test repeatedly or there is unusual coolant depletion, replace at once).
The biggest single risk comes from failure to clean out old coolant and flush properly with VC-9 / Simple green (for grease and oil) during change.
If coolant chemistries are mixed, that is almost always fatal.

My friend has decided that a visit with a dealership manager is in order, because if the pH was off (as they told him), they should have been able to put in the $15 additive instead of changing the coolant.
