We would like to take the kids to Washington which is about a 2 1/2-3 hour trip for us. We would like to camp but don't want to pay the Cherry Hill prices of $65 a night if we aren't going to be doing anything there since we will be going into DC for the days. Anyway, can you all make some suggests of other basic safe campgrounds in the area with at least water and electric and a dump station. Thanks.

I like Pohick Bay Regional Park near Lorton, VA. It's about 15 minutes from the Franconia-Springfield metro stop, full hookups were about $45, and there are lesser hookups available for less.

We are heading to Cherry Hill Campgroung in College Park Md tomorrow. It consistently rates as the best campground in the DC area. Maybe do a search for Cherry Hill and read the reviews.

Check out Little Bennett Regional park in Montgomery COunty, MD. It is right off of I-270 and might meet your needs.

I like Bull Run Regional Park. It's right off of I-66 which makes it easy to get to a metro center or to drive into the city.

Just remember, it can be close to impossible to find parking in DC. It also can be hard to find parking at Metro stops. You may burn more gas than the cost of paying the extra at Cherry Hill. The metro buses come right to the park.

Having lived in the DC Metro area for almost the last 30 years my advice is to just stay at Cherry Hill. Any alternatives will be a lot more hassle to get to public transportation and especially the Metro train. Even the county parks will run you around $45/day so the extra 20 and convenience that Cherry Hill offers is $$$ well spent IMO.

If you could do without electric, Greenbelt Park is the way to go.

We love this park. When our daughter was in college at American University, we used this park as our base. You can drive to the Shady Grove station and take the metro if you like, but we usually drove in. We liked it better than Cherry Hill because it was much cheaper and we weren't interested in the amenities anyway. Also, we didn't have to drive the motorhome around the beltway.
Once we were ready to leave, we were already out of the city.
