I’m looking for route suggestions regarding a 4 day jeep/tent camping trip in Death Valley (yes, I know this is a RV forum, but I usually get great feedback here). The general idea is:
Start in Ridgecrest the first morning. Go to Ballarat, over Mengel Pass and spend the first night in Butte Valley. Stay at the Geologist Cabin if it’s available. (We’ve done this part of the route before, will be 3 well equipped vehicles)
Day 2 - Go east, then north on West Side Road and explore the Galena, Johnson, and Hanaupah Canyons (spend the night in one of the canyons)
Day 3 - Go further north and explore Titus Canyon. Maybe go all the way to Scotty’s Castle. Not sure where to spend the night.
Day 4 - Head south, through Shoshone, and back to So. Calif on the 4’th day.
Any other backcountry spots we should make a point to see or camp at?
On Day 3 I would go into Beatty, NV and fill up with fuel, ice and whatever else you need. It's not that far from the Titus canyon drive turn off. Then coming southwest out of Beatty you might as well make a quick stop at Rhyolite qhost town. The turn off for Titus canyon is ~ 2 miles southwest of Rhyolite. Titus canyon drive is about 3 hours if you take it leisurely. If you make it to Scotty's and it's getting late, I would just go over to Mesquite Springs campground. There is potable water there too. While it's not remote camping, IMO, it's currently the best campground in Death Valley.
