Those of you whom harp to use nothing on wheel studs, please come here, I have several wheels stuck on friend's cars that need your magic.

Loosen the nuts 1 turn and drive the vehicle a few feet.

Okay, since you asked...

Note that due to the clearance fit, there is no force transmitted by or as a result of the centering feature. Neither this force diagram nor my previous explanation have anything to do with wheel centering. Keep in mind that many vehicles use only the wheel studs for centering.

I believe that you are proving the need for friction on the hub face to wheel interface, and I do not disagree with you. I am suggesting the need for lube on the hub center to wheel interface - which is unaffected by the stud clamping forces. We are arguing different points. So how about we both win?

The only wheel stud I have had a problem with came loose about 2 turns and galled the threads and spun the bolt in the hub. Had to take the hub off and cut the bolt in half. Worse part is I always used never seize until that happened. Wont go with out the never seize again.

Yep and that centering interface was all I was saying it is O.K. to lubricate, not the entire hub or wheel surfaces. The lube on the wheel pilot to hub interface will prevent the wheel sticking to the hub due to rust at that very close tolerance interface.

I sometimes use lubrication on lug studs and on the rim to hub interface. If the lug nuts are fastened to a correct torque, there is little chance of loosening while underway. Retorquing lug fasteners after a short mileage interval is a good safety precaution.

I've had some minor skirmishes with rusted lugs and, recently, aluminum rims on steel hubs. Some judicious use of heat and cold water on the nut or on the rim, will make life tolerable again.
