We had the same issue. We bought a piece of expanded metal (painted it white), cut it to size and mounted it to the bottom inside of the door with screws and found some plastic moulding to cover the edge and siliconed it on.

Another products to try is the same they put on residential screen doors "hardware cloth"--comes in a couple of grid sizes. It can easily be cut to fit, just be sure to cover the sharp edges with a trim piece.

Plexiglass would work but will block air flow.

When we had the 5the wheel; I bought a plastic/vinyl protector at ACE hardware for $7-8 bucks....worked VERY well and was safer for the animals as they didn't get their paws stuck or cut from rough edges you might find from cutting metal down with snips.
