My truck manufacture'sr specs call for P tires on my truck.

A friend, who doesn't really tow much, said I definitely should use LT tires.

Am I O.K. towing with P tires?

You haven't provided very much info, but I'll say if the truck manufacturer specs call for P-rated, you should be OK. If you tow often, the tires will probably wear quicker than their LT counter parts and they will very likely be less stable, depending on the weight/load. I recently went back to P rated tires from LTs on my half ton. The ones I got are comparably rated to 6 ply LT tires and I expect them to perform fine.

I will air my tires up to their max 44psi when I tow, which will help with stability and keep them running cooler.

IT DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH WEIGHT YOU ARE CARING. LT TIRES COME IN DIFFERANT LOAD RANGE FROM 6PLY 8PLY OR 10PLY. P TIRES ARE JUST 4PLY

what is your vehicle and what are you towing.

I went from p to LT tires on my last truck which was a half ton. Towed MUCH better. gave up some of the ride comfort when not towing, but i thought it was worth it.

If you tow then I would use LT's.

Don't know what you are driving....but when we had an Expediton..it came with P rated tires. I replaced them with LT's.

It was noticeably more stable when towing and it really didn't change the ride comfort level.

My F-150 came with P's (bought it used), and when they wore out I switched to E rated LT's (Michelin M/s 2's). Our TT is just 4600# loaded but the improvement in towing was impressive. The stiffer sidewalls (12 Ply vs 3 or 4 ply), increased stability and dramatically improved the ride. You will pay a slight fuel tax as these tires are a little heavier, my best guess is that they cost me about .3 mpg which I am happy to pay. As far as the LT's giving a stiffer ride it has not been an issue. I tow with the rears at about 60 to 65 and the front at 60, non towing I run all four at 50 and the ride is very smooth (these are strictly street tires, not all terrain's). If you tow, get a set of LT's, you will be amazed at what a difference they make.

OEM tires are ok for towing as they are required (by law) to be capable of handling the GVWR or your truck. That being said, LT tires have stiffer side walls and will be more stable than passenger tires. You don't NEED truck tires but it will ad a certain amount of stability to the towing platform. A load range C would be sufficient, D would be better but you have few tire options in a D load range and an E would be overkill but OK if you don't mind the harsher ride.

Truck tires or passenger tires (if they're radials and most run radials) do not actually HAVE plys. LT tires are 6 ply RATED and 8 ply RATED and 10 ply RATED and passenger tires to not rate by plys, just the weight.

Good luck / Skip
