We only use full hook up camp grounds. They always sell out fast. For the major holidays we call early ( March - April) in the season to reserve.

Actually, along the Front Range in Colorado it is just about exactly as you folks describe. You will have a hard time getting a campsite at the popular state parks and national parks and forests during the summer without a reservation. dKuntz, let me know when and where you are thinking about and I will try to give you some ideas.

Made my reservation for for the July 4th Holiday last Christmas. Our State parks accept reservations on a rolling 6 month window.

Most of our State Parks fill up on the w/e.

Word of advice, if your calling a campground you've never been to before on a Thursday, and they still have sites for that w/e, theres a reason.

Agreed, you are going to have a hard time here finding anything last minute at a campground for the big weekends. Best bet is national forest dispersed camping, and even then you need to a long way away from the urban corridor (I-25)

Private campgrounds are rarely booked solid... but they can run $50+ per night.

Have reservations at a private for the memorial day w/e 31 a night. Not to bad for a holiday w/e.

I too am in Colorado and just booked Lathrop State Park for a mid-July weekend and Golden Gate Canyon State Park for a mid-September weekend. Lathrop wasn't hard to find spots; Golden Gate Canyon was. Lesson learned -- book early.
