I have looked at about a hundred TT/5'rs this week here in the great state of Texas. Only about 7 or 8 have the vehicle inspection sticker, including mine. What's up with this? Is it really required? It doesn't seemed to be enforced if it is. There is a DPS officer across the street from our campsite that I have thought about asking, but ! Mine expired last month! Oh, we'll.............

Yes the inspection stickers are required.......yearly.
BUT the yearly requirement is NOT enforced.
You are suppose to get it inspected when you get back to TX (if out of state when sticker expires).
As a good TX citizen you should follow the inspection sticker requirement....yearly.

New York has vehicle inspection laws as well. Not apparently as enforced any better than Texas. There are as many opinions as to where to put the stickers as people to ask. I always staple them to the registration. The LEOs will be asking for both usually anyway. Therefore, with my flatbed and 5er, it appears as though they aren't inspected when they really are. As someone else said, until you get in an accident or stopped for other reasons, the police have other pressing duties. JMO.

A good TX friend who is a stickler for obeying the law just found out his new fifth wheel should have a TX inspection sticker. He discovered this in a casual conversation with a TX DPS officer while both attended a Red Cross emergency preparedness training session. During a break he walked out to the parking lot and checked for stickers on all the emergency response trailers. Many had no stickers and those that did were all expired - including the two owned by the DPS which had expired in 2003 and 2005.
When he got home he looked for the sticker on his new 5th wheel and couldn't find it. He called the dealer who sold him his new trailer a couple of months ago and was told they didn't have the capability to do inspections and it was up to him to get it done if he wanted a sticker.
He's not a satisfied customer...

Same here in Va. and while I have done them on my vehicles since moving here in 1984 have never had either of our two trailers done (too much of a PITA IMO) in 28 years. I figure the first ticket when and if I get it will be less than not paying the 20 to 25 dollars a year for the annual inspection. I also wouldn't trust anyone close to me to do the inspection.

I lived in Ca for over 40 years. I got tired of their money making schemes to make money. When you've had enough just move. I moved to Wyoming. Like Popeye said. I can't take any more. Most of these money making schemes are for collecting taxes. Nothing else. Time to move on. There are some great states that won't tax you to death for everything. find one and settle down. You will love it.

There may or may not be a requirement to place them at a visible location on your RV. I know my motorcycles just have to be available if I'm stopped here in LA.

Been towing in Texas for many many years and I recently heard about the inspection sticker for the trailers when I purchased a used trailer from a dealer last month. The dealer told me they were required (and always have been) but that the DPS was going to start enforcing it now.
I've never had an officer say anything about an inspection sticker for the trailer but it's been quite a while since I've been pulled over while towing (gas prices have slowed me down quite a bit.......)
My plan is to play dumb (I'm an expert ) if asked.

There is a 4500 pound gross weight or registered weight threshold. Anything less than that does not require the inspection.
Here is a link to what they will inspect:TX Trailer Inspection
