Hogwash! That's like saying a Ford is not as good as a Chevy. CAT made an excellent mh engine, regardless of size.

The last "bad" diesel engines were the Chevrolet 6.5 liter V8 and the Detroit Diesel 8.2 liter 4 stroke.
Neither was particularly long lived, powerful or economical on fuel.

Cat does not produce a diesel engine for motorhomes that meets 2010 emission standards. Only choices now are Cummins, Navistar and the new Detroit 13 liter engine.
Of related interest about Navistar engines not making EPA standards. http://www.americanmachinist.com/304/News/Article/False/88434/

I'm not impressed with the C7...cold starting is fair to poor, and they simply do not seem to hold up. We have three C7 powered trucks at work...two have already been replaced (one failed catastrophically), the third has excessive blow-by & drinks oil. I would much rather have a B-series Cummins.

Does this apply to 2008 and newer diesel engines? That is what the op was asking about. Think he will still have some Cat engines to pick from in my 2008 and 2009 at least.

This post brought back bad memories...my 2008 Ford F350 regened so often and so incorrectly that I would gain 2 quarts of diesel oil in my pan between oil chnages. Ford told me not to worry.
My 2010 8.9 Cummins Diesel pusher which has a DPF but not a DEF fluid requirement has either never regened...or done it when I wasn't paying attention..and didn't see a messsage on the display. Obviously Cummins figured this out...Ford didn't.

We've got an 08 Bounder Diesel with 325 Cummins. No problems at all with the DPF. I am aware of it going through the Regen process only once since we've owned it. I would'nt worry about it in terms of choosing one motorhome versus another.
