Cat has gotten out of the OTR market cause of the new emission requirements. So they are no longer available in Trucks or Motorhomes.

rjstractor, what is a 'parked' regen? You let the motor run?

Yes, that's exactly it. The emission system that our Detroit Series 60 engines use have the ability to passively regen, but that requires the exhaust system to get hot enough to burn off the soot in the filter. With the short stop and go driving that we do mixed in with extended idling (on high idle) the rigs will not passively regen. A parked regen runs the engine at a very high idle (1600 rpm) and injects fuel into the filter to burn off the soot. It takes 20-40 minutes and burns several gallons of fuel.

Hopefully technology will evolve to make this system work better for city/emergency vehicle use. It if doesn't, I would not be surprised to see more CNG or gasoline powered fire apparatus, even with the associated disadvantages to using those fuels.

I am looking into purchasing a Fleetwood Motorhome and have heard that the 2008's and newer come with a diesel filter and can have issues. I have had issues with the DPF on my Ford truck and do not want to deal with that in a motorhome. Just wondering if anyone has any input on this subject. The wife likes a 2008 model but I would rather go with a 2007 just so I don't have to deal with the diesel filter issue.

Thanks!

The main issues are fuel in the oil and a massive wallet whack for the fuel they waste. (They dump raw fuel into the exhaust to purge the filter.) Personally, I would not own a post-2007 diesel if you gave it to me. I would go with an older unit or a gas engine. Diesel power has jumped the shark.

So if the coach is pre 2010 does it not have that DEF extra 45 gallon tank? I am just trying to figure all this out now. Gives me more things to think about.

2008 engines got the exhaust filter. (And the first "ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL FUEL ONLY" tags.) 2010 engines got the urine system. Note: a 2008 unit might well be on a 2007 chassis with a 2007 (no particulate filter) engine, and a 2010 (or even 2011) unit might well have a 2009 (no DEF) engine.

My 2011 MH on a "leftover" 2010 FL XCR chassis has the DPF system on the 400HP ISL. It did the Regen once after about 8k miles, getting about 8mpg,so far so good.

I had an early 425 that had so many regen problems cummins gave up and replaced the whole motor.....yes... Now I have a 11 model last of the regen before urea... No problems at all...my advice bring it to cummins and have them check how often it goes into regen. My old unit did it every 12 hours, my 11 model does it every 100 hours. Once I found out my new one was going over 100 hours between regen I trust it.

jarlaxle: You are posting information that is not accurate. They do not dump fuel into the DPF. When it goes in to a FULL regen it injects MINUTE amounts of fuel. I doubt you could measure the volumes. Our unit is an 08 with 35,000 miles and it has only had 2 full regens. When it goes into a passive regen no diesel is injected.
