This is a topic close to my heart. I've compiled a list of healthcare resources in general - some of them are insurance options.

Its a nightmare. We have been self-employed or retired so have paid for our own insurance for the last 15 years. We are now both working again. Mostly because of the rising cost of healthcare. Its over $1000/mo. with a $5k deductible on each person. And it keeps going up every year. We are in our late 50's and I doubt it will go down much when we can do Medicare. The supplemental will be as expensive as a basic policy by then.
We are not broke but the rapid rate increases are eating away at our savings faster than we planned.

You might check to see if you can go on the State Insurance Pool if your state has one and you qualify for it..
Our state has one and had several options at the time we retired and before we were 65.. It sure helped me keep my insurance reasonable, but we did not have any ongoing medical problems.. I did go with a higher deductible..
Now that we are on Medicare with Supplemental.. Bye the way, we don't pay a monthly fee for the supplemental.. Our area offers several options there too..

Its law to buy vehicle insurance. Whats the difference? Everyone should morally have insurance so that they don't burden those of us who do.
The "Don't get sick and if you do, die quickly" plan isn't working so well.

X2, and unemployment insurance, SS, and Medicare. Government is (WAS) setup to do what was morally right for it's people, since it is FOR the people and not the health care industry.
The only young snowbirds I mostly see now are from Canada. I think I know the reason why they are enjoying snowbirding (or FT'ing) while Americans are waiting to hit 65.

With a pre-existing condition your best bet is to look at High Risk Pools. Since you are fulltimers you may be able to shop around a few states (depending on your residency flexibility):
http://www.healthinsurance.org/risk_pools/
We have a high-deductable plan...basically "catastrophic" insurance. It covers nothing except big events, and that's what we insure for. We pay everything else (smaller hospital visits, yearly checks etc.) out of pocket. The main advantage is that it's inexpensive ($150/mo for both of us combined). Of course it helps that we're younger and healthy.
I totally agree that self-health insurance is a nightmare.

Ours is over a $1K/mo and it goes up 10% every year. We both have light skin cancer from living in Florida that requires annual check ups and in-office treatment but it adds up. We spend $2K-$3K out of pocket every year for dental, etc.
