I have made several upgrades that helped dramatically while we where in Yosemite this week with the coldest temp at 28 degrees. This is my 3rd early spring trip and needed to make changes to make life more comfortable.

#1. Insulation for all windows and vents:

#2 Insulation on the inside of all external access doors, it is amazing the amount or cold/heat transfer the aluminum doors put off.

#3. Shrink and Seal Window kit. You cant see it very well, this a plastic sheet that is attached to the window frames with clear double stick tape. No more window fogging..

#4 Replaced the majoring of the incandescent lights with LED's. Big change while dry camping, they put off more light and use less power.

#5 Added a small box to the back bumper. I had to use a tool box to get the size I was looking for. The box holds all of the wood blocking which freed up a significant amount of storage compartment space. The bracket to the left front of the box holds my Direct TV satellite dish, I have an extension to clear the neighbors that I can use of the front or back. It works well in about 80% of the time.

In all the changes added to the temp I was able to maintain, how long my batteries lasted (twice daily charge worked well, for the 6 nights) and I could see out the dinette windows without condensation.

Hi Chuck,

Nice Job!

What did you use to hold the insulation onto the compartment doors?

Great idea insulating the storage doors. Did you use double stick tape to attach it?

I used the highest rated contact cement to attached the insulation. Hopefully it will stand the test of time.

When I am camping off the power grid and it is going to be REAL COLD I will throw my 30X20 tarp over the whole POPUP trailer and tie to the ground on the back side and up over the awning on the front side. really helps with keep things warm inside...

Sometimes it's the littlest things that can have a huge effect.

Just curious, are you concerned about mildew in the locker by closing off the airflow through the vent ?
Or do you block it open when you store it ?
I live in a pretty wet climate so anything in there would be trashed after a month or two of storage. Still, aluminum DOES make a great heat sink and that's not always a good thing...

Some good ideas there.

If you have a table like ours with seats on either side and one end facing the outer wall, if you put carpeting on the outer wall it keeps cold out during cold weather camping.

DeadeyeLefty,

Condensation is an issue with and without the vent insulation. Our trailer has 3 vents I covered only 1 of them for that reason.

Fortunately while in Yosemite we had 1 day in the low 60's and that is when I opened all windows to clear the condensation. I have typically only camp once in the spring when the weather in marginal.
