Stopped today at the roadside stand and bought fresh picked strawberries. Bought five quarts for $15.00, brought them home, washed and capped them, sliced them up and sprinkled sugar over them. I like to put them in the fridge for about 24 hours and then eat them straight, no cake or cream, whipped or otherwise. My wife likes hers mashed, but I prefer sliced.
I live in what used to be the strawberry capitol of the U.S.A. Bald Knob, Arkansas used to ship strawberries out by the train cars full. Back in the 50's and early 60's, school would be dismissed for about two weeks so the kids could help their families make money picking berries. When I was a kid, my parents used to load us up in the truck and find a farm where we could pick on the halves. I remember Momma making strawberry jam for a week and them selling some of the jam for extra money. No one lets you go in and pick anymore, they say their plants were getting torn up by folks who did not care or did not know how to pick berries.

Honestly, that is an awesome recap of then and now. I also miss those days growing up in MI. Used to be able to go out in the fields and pick our own fresh sweet corn and green beans. But now it is the same end result, people not having any respect for other peoples property. It is amazing how our society has changed for the worse.
Kinda iff topic but, not really. We have farmers markets in my area. No big ones but, one of the places I camp at has a huge one just down the road. I love to go them while I'm camping and pick up all sorts of fresh vegetables. Then bring them back to the park and feast. Nothing like fresh carrots, tomatoes, asparagus, sweet corn, and even kohlrabi's. The stuff you buy at the store pales in comparison. I even started a garden of my own just for stuff like that.
That brings back some good memories. My mom used to can all kinds of fruit and veggies. We used to pick alot of it too. Try and get kids to do that now. Not going to happen. Sad part is they probably won't eat it either. Their loss. DW used to can stuff and over the years let it go. We were just talking the other day about canning some fruit and pickles this year. Yum!

That reminds me of my Childhood. We canned all kinds of vegetables.
I heard once about this man who grew all kinds of Tomatoes. One Day, someone asked him, what do Y'all do with all of those Tomatoes? He answered, "We eat all we can, and what we don't eat we Can."
Years ago, we were at a campground in MI at the end of strawberry season. There was a "pick your own" strawberry field next to the campground. All that was left on the fields were these tiny little strawberries (but they were VERY ripe). Our kids and us picked for an hour or two. We had so many buckets of strawberries, we didn't know if we could eat them all. The strawberries were small and super ripe. Back at the campground, we all put the strawberries on a cloth on the picnic table at the campsite and ate and ate and ate. It was a definite "Food of the Gods" moment. Even now, when I mentioned it, my kids all remembered how great it was.
A friend lives in the Austin, Tx area and she's found a field where she can take her kids to experience picking berries. They also go pick apples and peaches in the summer.
My Grandfather liked his strawberries capped, smashed, plenty of sugar over Saltines! Don't see that much anymore and I have the hardest time convincing my wife to let me spoon a bunch of juiced strawberries over crackers but they sure are good. Anyone else eat them this way?
We have a huge "Pick your Own" strawberry field right down the road! There are a lot of them in our area and a lot of farmers around here sell everything from butterbeans to fresh country made sausage to the public. It will be at least another couple of weeks before the strawberrys are ready but it will be worth the wait. YUM
