From Portland last year I took I-26 west, then I turned into highway 6. All good road through lots of forests to Tillamook. I stayed at TT in Pacific City.

But if you are headed north from Tillamook the Astoria bridge is not bad at all. Looks high, but once you get on it, it is not even noticeable.

Dennis, if you have an "old fart" card there is a "hidden" COE park on the Washington side off I-82/highway 14 to the west several miles. After the big scare of 9/11, they took down the signage. We have stayed there a number of times. 30amp and water, dump station on the way out. This park is in cottonwood trees and on the river. The nearest town is Plymouth, WA. The campground is at 45°56'00.36"N 119°20'57.87"W according to Google Earth.

We have done both I-84 and highway 14. Each has scenic moments. The south side of the gorge has the Union Pacific RR. The north side has the BNSF RR.

Also consider "doing" the east side Mt. St.Helen. Amazing views.

I would suggest parking in one place and do day trips to see the scenic parts.

Have fun

Pretty close to Pendleton, but the Boardman, OR Marina Park campground is one of our favorites. Right on the river, big paved sites, and very affordable!

Somewhat related, after traveling thru the Dalles+ heading for Cannon Beach, what is the drive like thru Portland to hook up with highway 26,out to the coast? Driving a 43 ft.MH+ pulling a toad. Also what is highway 26 like for doing so?
Thanks

One quick suggestion I'd recommend is to pull off I84 at Biggs and cross into Washington at Hwy 97.

On the Washington side is Maryhill State Park and a replica of Stonehenge nearby. If you like wine tasting there's an excellent winery just to the west, Maryhill Winery, that we like a lot. There are excellent views of that section of the gorge from there terrace.

You can stay on WA 14 west or quickly slip back over to the Oregon side by re-crossing Hwy 97 bridge to return to I84.

I second this recommendations, plus once you set up camp at the State Park, cross back over to the Oregon side and go back east to Rufus, go under the freeway and turn left (west). There is a large level gravel area with a series of low slung gravel islands stretching west. Great place to look for agates and Biggs Picture Jasper. And it is a great place for bird watching.

The Oregon side is the easier drive with more things to see. Drive scenic highway on your toad if you get the chance. One of my favorite drives.

Clearly marked .. Stay on the freeways 84 to I5 south, over the bridge immediate ( while still on the bridge) exit to I405 North and a quick exit to the HWY 26 exit to Beaverton. Some alternate ways take you downtown .. doable (city buses do it all the time) but the freeway rte is less stressful. 26 is a major HWY 6 lanes then 4 then down to 2 as you go over the coast Mtn range.

My post's are my opinion The advice, comments etc are free and worth what you paid

Highway 26 is a four lane highway. Good road and if you are going to Tillamook you branch off 26 and take highway 6 which was also a good four and two lane road. Takes you right into Tillamook.

BRUEXXX: We are in the Astoria area right now and have driven both the 30 as well as the 26, both are very doable. 26 is a little faster after you get by Portland. From I84 I take the 205 around Portland and hook up with I5 until Longview, WA then turn West and pick up 30 in OR. I don't like trying to get to 30 going thru Portland, I have done it but I don't like it and 26 thru Portland isn't much better for me.

Getting thru Portland (coming west on 84) is actually pretty simple if that's your plan. Just don't do it during rush hours morning or evening. You can get to either 30 or 26 from either SB I-5 or NB I-5, via 405, as 405 just completes a circle around the city center area (in conjunction with I-5). Watch your signage and you shouldn't have any problem.
